Morris Vedette
« on: 03 August 2013, 00:05:06 »

Hi Guys

I saw another post re a Morris Vedette on this forum but now not sure if this is the right place to ask a question. If I am in the wrong place feel free to tell me so.
I have all the marine parts to put a morris vedette marine engine together. All I needed was a morris engine. It took me a while to find one in my area but ended up finding a nice 1100 mini engine.
I had problems trying to get the adaptor plate over the oil pump and asked a bloke here in Australia about it. He told me that the motor I had was for an auto set up and thus the larger oil pump. He then said that I would not be able to use this motor for the marine conversion as the oil passages were different and I should look for another motor?
I was devastated and thought I would check to make sure he was correct.
I thought all the morris/mini motors were pretty much the same and that if I changed the oil pump I could procerd with the motor build.

Can anyone throw some light on this for me please.

Regards,
Tony.

Welcome..

I think Guffer is the guy who might be able to help. I believe he was tinkering with one at some point. Drop him a private message. :y

the only difference in oil passageways is with the oil strainer pick-up. The large hole through the block-to-sump flange.

engines originally destined for in-line applications ( Morris Minor, Sprite/Midget, Marina, etc ) have a screw-in pick-up.

engines originally destined for transverse applications have just a plain hole in the flange face.

and yes, transverse automatic oil pumps are larger ( well, deeper actually ), but easily swapped for a standard one.

Hi Guys,

THank you for your replies. This looks a little suspicious as the bloke I had contacted here in Australia who said the motor was not suitable for marine conversion had told me he could sell me a standard manual Morris Minor engine. Sounds like he had a vested interest in selling me one of his motors.
With that large hole in the block  does the oil pick up just push in and stay there on its own?
So, it looks like if I fit a suitable oil strainer that will fit into the cast iron sump and go down to the lowest part of the sump (the sump being on an angle to fit to the shaft) and then fit a standard oil pump I should be able to proceed with the project.

Cheers,
Tony.

neither - there's a corresponding hole in the gearbox casting and the pick-up comes out elsewhere in the casting
