A short story so far.
Notice the car would thump into gear now and again so I had the fluid checked and topped up. All good for a few days. It then started again so I decided to go fo the full fluid filter and gasket change.
 Took to get this done and box and solenoids where checked afterwards all good , gave it a good run on the way home and it was smooth. That was a week ago. I have been of work this week so only covered about 100 miles. Took it to get some petrol and on the way I was doing about 20mph and it suddenly revd up then thumped into gear and the warning light came on the car with the spanner thru it. This was the first time.
Fill it up with petrol and when starting the car the light went out. I moved the car and parked it to read the codes and it came back with p0730-incorrect gear ratio.

anyway ideas please I iam getting cheesed off now.

if it helps problems I know I have are thermo switch stuck open-fans on all the time. To me car idles at 490 to 500. I was wondering if these two problems will effect what gear it wants.

I have once seen this fault code caused by the pressure control solenoid being faulty, however if the revs are rising, then it's a mechanical drivetrain issue in my experience

Yours is a 2.6 right? You could spend ages chasing the problem around, if it were me I'd fit a known good box on there, 3 hours work and job jobbed.. If you're not heavy on the right foot an ar25 will be fine too

James its a 3.2 so it has the ar35 in it.

Just a bit of slug in the bottom around magnet. Nothing else

It's a 3.2, so should have the full fat AR35 fitted

It had the same problem about 6 years ago but was ok after fluid change. Would occasionally hesitate in later years (maybe twice a year) but it was only doing low miles.

Just looking back at my posts I note I had a theory to change the crank sensor before doing anything else as the gearbox might be reading wrong engine speed - as said this was in  2009/2010

I had exactly the same problem with one of my 3.2's and as James will confirm a known replacement transmission may well be the best solution as he had the job of fitting it,I did consider frigging around with replacement solenoids etc and they may or may not have done the trick,but in the end took the gearbox option and since, no more problems. ::)Sorry Paul,probably not what you want to hear.

For the cost and hassle of sorting it, you'd do better to change to a known working box! or just put up with it for now?

Incorrect Gear Ratio, if fluid level is correct, and no other codes is usually a hydro-mechanical problem with the box.

Given that a good second hand box can be picked up for £75 or less, the most cost effective solution is replacement.

If there was no debris in the sumps when the atf was changed, there may be some mileage in changing solenoids. Third gear solenoid is often mentioned on here.

But, as said, if you have access to another known good box why mess about.


Where the gear box codes read at any point? Gear box Ecu "might" throw a specific solenoid code.

Pedal trick only reads engine ecu. Not gear box. Btw

ATF/Filters and thorough inspection/clean done at Serek's,I was there with Paul when it was done,and I drove it back here without a problem,the only thing that was apparent with the car( and probably not relevant) was that the idle was a slightly down and slightly uneven,but ran smoothly under load. Serek checked and no codes apparent at the time

As Ken said once serek has done the filter etc he ran it around for a good run then I went with him all good. He then had it on a reader and had the solenoids clicking as there should.
