Moving to US
« on: 13 February 2018, 19:14:00 »

In order to avoid hijacking Mark's thread any further I have created my own.  Sorry bud.

Basically, Dr G, I was looking at something suitable for both Mrs Guffer and myself.  She will need proximity to a suitable airport hub from which to work and I will need an area where my skills are in high demand.  We both like Chicago and the sums add up very nicely even if we aim for an area just 5 miles outside of the loop.  Yes there are cheaper areas then Chicago but then demand for my skills may be lower and Cindy's commute to work will be longer.

We have looked at Hawaii but without US Security clearance I am stuck trying for a job with Hawaiian Telecom and their security jobs come up very infrequently.  I have also looked at Fort Collins which is developing as a bit of a tech hub at the foot of the Rockies.  I would love it but then Mrs Guffer will be flying out of Denver and her flying schedule will be awful. New York, the salaries for me are amazing but so is the cost of living, plus that would mean flying out of Sewark and the desk staff there are the worst I have ever come across so I could not imagine Mrs Guffer working there.  West coast looks nice but I am not sure how I would like working with/for the silicone valley mindset, plus I have a dislike for Hell-A so I would prefer San Fran.  Midwest seems the best fit culturally even if the winters can bite as low as 20C which it did at New Year.  Even I felt that.

Then comes the curve-ball.  The people I am in partnership with don't really want to lose me and would consider raising some capital to buy a small cyber security company which I would then run and build up.  I have been excitedly doing some research but the small list of firms that are of a suitable size seem to be near Hell-A with one or two in the midwest.  This is before we start the approach and feasibility which will no doubt knock the list right down again.  I have 13 months left with this current client so there is plenty of time to find something suitable either way.

Shame about Denver airport not being suitable as, if was ever able to have the great fortune of being able to live in the States, Colorado, and in particular Colorada Springs would be my choice.

Such a lovely State with the Rockies, and the airport at Springs I found was very good. The scenery throughout the State is just beautiful.  8):y :y

My bad :-[

What about the South East? Atlanta or there abouts?

I guess re your work, how remote you can be depends largely on your specific niche... :-\

That said, there's a whole lot of the US, when you find an area that you like which also ticks a broad spread of requirements, then it's difficult to argue* against it ;)

Indeed, I am trying very hard to find a suitably sized company in the Chicago area.

I like Chicago, my uncle had a place out in Arlington Heights stayed with him for a couple of weeks.

How is working visa working out? Guess you have benefit of Mrs Guffer being US citizen?

I'd love to move and work abroad, but can't see that happening really.  :(

Some would say AH is not Chicago ::) ;D  I am looking at Avondale/Portage Park area, something the missus and I can completely gut and remodel as we wish.

Yes, Green card is fairly straight-forward, I just have to be careful what I post on @r$ebook about the Commander-in-Chief.

Sounds like a great opportunity!

How do you feel about the workplace culture in the US? Call me soft, but I rather like my paid sick days and 6 weeks paid holiday per year ;)

That is an exception rather than the norm... try the real world with barely twenty days holiday and no sick pay ::)

I might think about going then. I haven't had a day off sick in the (almost) 10 years in my current job, and I have asked my employer many times to pay me extra money rather than force me to take my holiday entitlement.
They say they would like to but Brussels wont allow it.
I think I would go to Alabama if I made the move, as for the first time I could be accused of being a bit of a lefty.  ;D
The company I work for is a tech company and have operation in North Carolina and California. Not sure if it would be suitable for Guffer, or if he would be interested in living there.  :-\

Depends on your industry - I've never worked anywhere with less than 25 days (bank holidays on top of that), I'm not sure I'd even look at a job with less (I mean, unless the options were that or unemployment, I suppose!).. I've accrued 30 on time-served, now.

That said, I know if I moved to the US I'd have 0 days holiday at the point of joining, but (at least where I work) they can actually accrue significantly more days than I can before hitting a cap (something like 320hrs or 40 days). No point me suggesting my place to the Army One, though, as we don't really "do" security (er, don't tell my CEO I said that, ok?) outside of our SOC, and our SOC is entry-level stuff.

Plus he'd have to move to Seattle, Spokane or San Jose.. or, more likely for the SOC, Warsaw ;D

I have thought about that and yes 2 weeks leave a year is, on paper, quite different to us in soft old Europe.  In reality by adding personal days, snow days*, occasional free days off given by the boss it's not as bad as it first appears.

*Highly likely in Chicago

Besides, if I end up being the boss then my pay and bonus is dictated by my results rather than how much time I spend in the office.

Friend of mine works for Crown Court service up norf as a Clerk, so is paid/employed by the government. He gets 40 days paid leave per year and several months sick and flexi-time.

As Aaron said, I have never worked anywhere where this hasn't been the case (actually, as a grad I had 5 weeks with the option to buy more), so the difference would be stark. That, and I know from auditing sites in the US, even very senior people don't get more than 1-2 weeks in some businesses.

I think, even in the "real world" going from (nearly) 4 weeks down to pretty much nil would be a big hit to take.

Guffer - Whats the situation regarding health out there, I know the US has a reputation for "produce your credit card or go away and die" health cover, but whats the reality?

You have to have insurance in the states, it's tough business, if you develop something that is not on your plan. You can't get a new plan that covers it, because it would a pre-existing condition. Least that is my understanding....

I would hope most big corporates offer it as part of perks, e.g. Private Health I get here at work.

Yep, the NHS might be a massive money-pit, but at least we don't have to deal with @rsehole insurance companies just to keep breathing. It'd have to be a BIG incentive for me to ever rely solely on private healthcare.

Yeah the private here is a "nice to have" extra, e.g. my old, old, old Boss broke his leg when off Skiing, he came back and GP said you need a scan and such.

He had about a 3 month NHS wait for what he needed, but the GP letter resulted in a private appointment the next day!

Health insurance is, as many o fyou know, an important part for me due to my conditions.  Pre-existing conditions must be covered now thanks to Obamacare and even the most anti-Obama GOPs won't support a repeal and replace of the Affordable care act which takes away this provision in law.

Either way, health care is covered.  In fact I am looking forward to getting some of my conditions treated over there as various thresholds (certainly in blood tests) are set to prevent serious issues later on whereas the NHS has some markers at the 'now you are are nearly dead we will treat you' level.  B12 and Thyroid blood markers are some good examples.

Might be of interest...

http://www.chministries.org/

The heavy religious leaning notwithstanding, but if you're moving to the US, then you need to learn to live with that ;)

Also www.daveramsey.com and have a look at the ELP section for the Zip codes you're looking at...

The three largest items of personal debt in the US are Student loans, Medical loans, and Credit card debt...

As far as the first two go, if your insurance won't cover the bill, then they slap interest on it and bill you until it's paid, or you die. Repeat as often as required.

Having insurance does not exempt you from medical bills, having enough insurance does.

Student loans are similar.

Both items can be cash flowed with care and planning.  :y

Clearly the most important question (which I can't believe hasn't been asked yet), which honking great v8 is going to be your weapon of choice? Or is it going to be a Cadillac Catera - in true OOF fashion ;).

You might not want to rely on that - a friend of mine (and a prostate cancer survivor) in the US is extremely worried about his healthcare going forward under the current administration (as he continues to have significant health issues as a result of the treatment - he's currently enjoying a stay in hospital for sepsis as a complication of a lymph node transplant); not just for him but also for his wife who has a 'pre existing condition'.. he's not given to hyperbole, either, so I don't think it's simple panic on his part.

Hmm, yes! When I was in Canada last year, the site GM had a fully specc'd Ford Raptor. Not sure which engine, but definitely 8 cylinders and sounded  8). Given the choice I'd have to have a pickup on that side of the atlantic, regardless of where I lived :y. Not least because I'd want a huge 5th wheel to go touring with.

My boss is a big Ford fan (and ex pro-am Mustang racing driver) and has a Raptor - very tasty they are, indeed. They're launching a 'Raptor' Ranger over here soon but sadly it's a twin turbo diesel four banger :(

And off the off chance Matt fancies something a little different - he has a restored first generation Bronco for sale..

Not much, he just chose to live in one of the most expensive areas in the country ;)

It's where he had to be for work really. When he lived in Stockholm he was with EA Games and transferred to USA [I assume he's still with same company]but I was referring more to his choice of car than his location :y

I would suggest you look at State/local authority unfunded pension liabilities as this is becoming a major expense for local taxes as the unfunded parts become increasingly taxes that must be raised now to pay pensions. John Mauldin of Mauldin Economics has had a number of articles in his FREE weekly news letter on this with Chicago one of the most underfunded areas in the US and iirc they are massively increasing property taxes to cover their immediate liabilities. I did enjoy a week on business in Chicago, in the early 1990s, where it is a great city. :y

Another area and Eastern tech hub worth taking a look at is Durham/Raleigh in North Carolina. I licenced software into the US through a company based there in the 1990s and it is the nicest place I've ever visited in the US. :y

Agree with you on hellA as this is the very worst city I've visited in the states. :(

Agreed, our favourite holidays have been in RV's round the Parks in the Rockies, which we've been doing since '79 every two years, but I always fancied the 5th wheels, but never found one for rental with a prime mover. Nor, sadly, an RV with a toad. >:(

Clearly the most important question (which I can't believe hasn't been asked yet), which honking great v8 is going to be your weapon of choice? Or is it going to be a Cadillac Catera - in true OOF fashion ;).

Now we're talking :y

I have been fawning over a big fat RAM3500 but until we up sticks and retire to the countryside that looks too unpractical.  I fancy another XF and the new XFR with the 3.5 supercharged motor looks very nice.

I've not heard about this. Is it very new?

I actually really quite like LA, although the traffic is a nightmare and the state does inarguably get prettier the further away from LA you get ;D (Trying to drive from Santa Monica to Needles at the far edge of the state in a day is not advised, especially if you don't leave Santa Monica until lunchtime  :-[ ;D)

I came back from visiting our head office in Seattle last week - every time I go there I wonder if I shouldn't move out there; there's a damn sight more opportunities (work-wise) out there than here.

Don't tell Louise I said that, though!

Driving time to the airport would have to factored in a move to Hell-A.  I am sure there are some nice areas in a one hour commute to LAX but my first trip to the city involved a bus and an encounter with a chap high on ice which has probably dented my opinion of the city ever since.

Judging by the way the place smells, the whole city is now pretty chilled out, if you know what I mean! But yeah, reasonable driving distance to LAX puts you in (largely) undesirable territory..

Echo Park looks alright, as does Santa Monica/Venice Beach, although affordable living somewhere you might actually want to live is usually a three hour drive from anywhere  ::)

Big lads don't concern me, I'm one of them and there is a mutual respect between us.  It's the small pr!ck who thinks he needs a knife to be respected by the big fellas I worry about.  Whenever I have been attacked it has always been small, skinny runts in sufficient numbers to prevent their b******s from shrinking at the thought of taking a big bugger down.

I believe Wayne Rooney was partial to 'granny fanny' in his younger days. It clearly didn't do the boy any harm. :)

Yes, I saw it. They were a bargain, esp when you consider that they were in one of the more upmarket areas.

This was actually quite an informative thread >:(

Well now it's an entertaining thread!  ;D

It's all relevant though, as I'm sure creatures as described above exist in the US of A as well!  ::)  Just in greater numbers!  ;)

I think we need to be seen to be extremely fair........ and blame STMO for everything past, present, and future. :)
I don't care, 'tis only a forum full of old geezers who sold/scrapped their omegas but won't go away.  ;D
