Network printer question

Set up:-

PC ethernet, printer connected to PC by USB.

Laptop, tablets and phones wireless.

Wireless devices can't  see printer on network.

What am I doing wrong?

Is network sharing enabled?  Also you may need to share the printer over the network.  Configurable in device settings.

Checked, yes everthing seems to be set up correctly, network sharing enabled, printer sharing enabled.

I've never tried attaching a tablet/phone to a printer, but the computers should be easy. I'm assuming they are all Windows?

Computer with Printer attached....
Hold down the Windows key (Start key on KBD) and tap R
A 'run' dialogue box will appear. Type
cmd
into the box (command on a seperate line to aid reading) and click OK.
A black box will appear, enter the following command
ipconfig /all
A load of text should appear in the black box.
You will probably need to scroll up in the black window. The first entry should be 'Host Name' after which there should be the computer name. To make life easier, lets say it's called 'PC-Print'.

On the computer without the printer....
Hold down the Windows key (Start key on KBD) and tap R
A 'run' dialogue box will appear. Type
\\PC-Print
Click OK (Replace PC-Print with the name of the computer got from the previous step).
All going well it should show a window with devices shared on that computer. If it does, a printer should be listed, if you use the right mouse button and select 'connect' it should install the printer. It may ask for drivers, especially if this PC is running a different version of Windows to the printing PC.

This should work with a few exceptions, such as Windows Firewall issue, permissions issues or mismatched workgroups.

Sounds like you haven't connected the printer to your router, Barry. If you had, there'd be no need for a physical connection between your PC and the printer.

Needs to be a Network or WiFi Printer to do that, as said USB to the PC, PC is on the Network with the correct Permissions then just Share the Printer over the Network.

Just a suggestion,  Barry, but WiFi printers are not expensive and would make life much easier for you.

Needs to be a Network or WiFi Printer to do that, as said USB to the PC, PC is on the Network with the correct Permissions then just Share the Printer over the Network.

PC on network with correct permissions and printer sharing set up :-\

Have you got another PC or Tablet running Windows, forget any Device not Windows for the time being, if so, check what you can over the Network, if you cant see the Printer, can you see the PC its connected to, if not start there and solve that one first.

Been thinking.  Might be a workgroup issue?  Depends on your OS and setup but you might have to setup a sharing of the printer rather than just having sharing enabled if you catch my drift.

Right, can now see it ok on laptop.

If I try to print from the laptop I get a printer error.

All the correct drivers are installed.

I hate computers, that's why I couldn't wait to retire!

If its a true wifi printer, being plugged into USB might stop it being on Wifi, particularly if its a cheap consumer oriented lump.

For non Windows devices, the printer will have to support the printing technology, such as AirPrint for gayDevices, or have an app installed in the case of many consumer wifi printers.

You shouldn't really be sharing out via the PC, as you are likely to find drivers aren't built that way for the cheap devices.

Its an HP5510 printer.

Used to work under Win7.
How are you "sharing" it?  Its a cheap, nasty Wifi printer, so there should be no USB.

If sharing via a PC, its possible/likely that the driver does not support that, hence better off just connecting purely via Wifi.

My laser gets a around 3-4000 pages a year.

Don't do a lot of printing, hence ink cartridges keep drying out, now the cheapo Hp has given up the ghost and says the print heads need replacing.

Don't particularly need colour so bought a mono laser printer to replace it.

I couldn't believe my canon inkjet fired up and first print was perfect, given its not been turned on for a year (as the colour LaserJet prints just about everything here)

It was working fine till I replaced the cartridges with genuine HP ones, then I got the error message >:(

Never, ever buy HP consumer grade stuff. Or similar from other tier 1 brands. But you knew that ;)
My HP printer has been working fine for more than five years. It used to take a hammering when the lad was doing GCSE's and A levels. Think it cost less than 50.

When my old hp business ink jet died I replaced it with a colour hp m252dw  laserjet for about 150.

That has been superseded by the  m252dw for 150 less 50 cashback

The HP photosmart is only just over 3 years old.

It was working fine till I replaced the cartridges with genuine HP ones, then I got the error message >:(
Never, ever buy HP consumer grade stuff. Or similar from other tier 1 brands. But you knew that ;)
I bought a cheap HP, about 30, from Argos 3 or 4 years ago on the basis that it 'should' print A5 amongst other sizes. It didn't! HP customer service were brilliant, sent me a software patch, it now prints A5, and has worked well since then. :y

TBH, given the prices of colour lasers now, as a general purpose printer, inkjets shouldn't really be considered now :y

Inkjets still have a niche in some areas, so aren't completely dead.

Just be careful how you configure those networked printers.  I have done some work on this in the past and found that most makes are highly vulnerable to attack and many, once pwned, can be used to pivot on to other devices on the network.  This article talks about Brother printers but in reality they aren't the worst....

I think you could replace "networked printers" with "anything attached to the network" - though your point is entirely valid. The security of any IoT device is pretty universally shite.

Someone asked me yesterday if they should enable the WiFi on their cooker... I looked at them like they'd gone mad.

I have no problem with enabling such features on cookers and cameras so long as they are done correctly. i.e. changing password defaults, firewalling it off to restrict to the internal network or NATing and defining the whitelist whom/whatever requires access, keepnig firmware up to date, etc, etc, etc......

But yes if they are asking if they should do it then I suspect they dont know what they are doing and should put whatever tech they own in a box and send it back to the manufacturer.

It's funny you say that and after following recent discussions in various forums I feel that future litigation, or the prospect of, could shape IOT security posture going forward.  Imagine Mr X buys a wireless camera and, due to poor security, it is used by hackers in a DDoS attack against victim Y along with thousands of other devices from the same manufacturer.  Victim Y pays for an investigation and discovers all the devices used, then sues the owner of each one.  They in turn investigate and argue the manufacturers were negligent in shipping them with dodgy firmware, backdoors, etc and in turn sue the makers through class action.  We could end up in a scenario whereby iot products will have an official shelf-life after which your insurance company will no longer cover you in the event a litigation lawyer turns up asking for some wonga in damages.

Such a scenario has the potential for some interesting developments in the near future.

I very nearly ordered this yesterday - I've had my mono laser for nearly 10 years now, still works fine but fancied an upgrade to colour.. then I started looking at the multifunction printers to see if I could combine my sheet-fed scanner and printer.. it's a slippery slope, shopping!

As long as I print a test page every couple of weeks, and run the print head clean software once a month, it may stop them drying out, but then I'm an optimist  ::)

Yeah - there's one about that price-point on the HP site, in fact (less 40 cash-back, less 7% cash-back through work).. it's tempting, I just don't know if I can hide a box that big from Louise  ;D ;D ;D

Found setting up my Epson C1100 network laser printer very easy on my updated Windows 10 laptop. Likewise setting up a logical drive to login to my Linux server easy. :y
