Assuming/ check that nothing is almost pulling the catch open such as overtight  adjustment /damage to internal pull lever or external handle pull rod. Other than that I would whip the mechanism out ( whole item with catch and locking motor attached) and get familiar with how the catch engages and see if anything can be repaired etc( condition of the part that matches the door striker etc).otherwise just replace the unit.
If any other members have had similar and there’s an easy or obvious fix they may be along shortly to advise ? Cheers.

Where in Sussex are you?

Removing the latch mechanism and cleaning/oiling should sort it, but if it's badly worn then good second hand will be the long term fix.

Off topic .... :(

IMHO it's not a good idea to use an email address as a screen name on any forum ... you are leaving yourself wide open to scam/phishing attempts, spam mail, etc etc .... for safety's sake ... I suggest you change it PDQ !!

Welcome BTW .. :)

Ah yes, I had the same issue. Started app. 2 years ago and lasted until 3 months ago. I was never able to figure out what was wrong with the door lock, though replacing it with another second hand lock did the job.

I've checked it, oiled it, opened it, closed it and checked it again. Still don't know what caused the problem. Still, I'd recommend to swap it with another (second hand) lock mechanism. You can get it on ebay for app. 10-20 pounds.

I would replace, not even bother trying to fix old one.

Reliable enough that breakers will have plenty of good ones, and silly prices ;)
