Danny Baker fired by the BBC......
« on: 09 May 2019, 11:12:25 »

......for tweeting a picture of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex leaving hospital with a chimp. He still can't see what all the fuss is about, it's all in other people's minds.  ::)

Yup.  The guy's a prat.  That he had no idea of how it would have caused offense is, quite frankly, absurd.

If you have any doubt over his level of stupidity watch the doorstep interview he gave on his account of the meeting with the BBC.

He has always been a class 1 idiot, but in this country, which supposedly has freedom of speech, he should not be pilloried for saying stupid/controversial things; others equally have the right to respond in their own way - and they did.
As Voltaire was (wrongly) said to proclaim, "I may not agree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it".

I agree, Ron, to a point. But you could also say that the people criticising him have their right to do that, and the BBC have the right to sack someone for what they consider to be gross misconduct. Like most things, it works both ways.

'Rights' are subjective and, often, one persons rights can be trumped by another person's rights. i.e. The Sussex's rights to leave hospital with their newborn without people posting offensive tweets.

I was incorrect in my first post, it wasn't an image of the Duke and Duchess, it was a stock photo with, possibly, racist text.

They are strongly in the public eye/domain and in a highly privileged position, so hardly a level playing field. Not to defend Baker, but there were bigger guns aimed at him; did he really have to lose his job?

I am not defending or chastising anyone, Ron. Nowadays, the world works in a way which is alien to me, so I just get on with my life and let others get on with theirs. Some of the things my PC headteacher wife comes out with make me either want to laugh out loud or cry. The other day I used the term 'Deaf and dumb'. I was told that is a very offensive term and the correct one is 'Deaf and mute'.
Yeah.........I'd show you offensive if I didn't just want a quiet life.

Freedom of speech does not equate to freedom to insult.  It is a rare day I agree with STEMO but he is right when he says that one's 'right' goes both ways regardless of whether you are in the public eye or not (and whether or not it is through your own choosing).  Otherwise you could say that my right to drive a motor vehicle supercedes everyone else's right to being safe on the road, which is clearly pish.

The quote which you mention was actually made by someone else to describe Voltaire's views on freedom of speech, not by Voltaire himself.  Additionally, the context of said quote was very different from this situation.  Voltaire was against aristocratic authority and how it often suppressed freedom of speech, i.e. state-level suppression of rights and not freedom to say what you like even if it erodes other people's rights to not be subjected to offense.  Voltaire himself was a proponent of a constitutional monarchy which protects the rights of the individual.

I feel the use of this quote in this context is very misplaced.

I would say that freedom of speech is absolute.......but it isn't always a good idea to use that freedom. Best to keep your gob shut at times.

Nobody has the right to be ' not offended '. Some people are offended by almost everything. Think generation snowflake.

......and I think you are all a bunch of tossers. Especially the gobby scouser. :)

I was very surprised when I heard about this, as although I don't know a lot about him, I always had the impression he was a  typical lefty liberal BBC type.
Havent heard his interview yet, but just heard a discussion about it on LBC. Someone said he is well known for posting pics of the Chimps dressed up as famous people, and also has exactly the same thoughts on the Monarchy as STEMO and Optis grandma, so he tweeted what he did without giving a thought to the racial element.
I still find it hard to believe someone in his position could do that in this day and age, without realising what would happen, but who knows.  :-\

[puts glasses on]  Ah, yes.  Sorry I honestly failed to see the part in brackets.  Maybe I just got in to autopilot as I often do when I see that Voltaire quote ::)

I do not agree with your interpretation of my motoring analagy but that's fine :y  I think what you mean is that different people get offended by different things and it is difficult, oft impossible, to know who will be offended by what.  Sometimes I feel the offense taken is justified, sometimes not.  A whole load of subjectivity goes in to each scenario and I bet no two people will feel the same about every single one.  I, for example, take great offense at anyone making fun of cyclists getting hurt or killed but this is due to my own experiences as both a cyclist and from what happened to my brother.  Yet not everyone will feel the same because they have had different life experiences.

In this particular case though it is well known, and widely considered unacceptable, to conflate race with apes of any kind.  That Danny worked on 5 Live, a channel that hosts a lot of football and will certainly know the challenges the sport has had with this very specific insult, and that he claimed not to know it would cause offense is simply absurd and for that he deserved to be fired.

Seriously though, I did read an earlier post of yours concerning cyclists and although I am not enamoured of their misbehaviour on the roads and pavements, I do not advocate the death penalty - merely that they be dealt with accordingly.

It's really quite a simple task, put your brain into gear before engaging your mouth but obviously this task is beyond some people.

That's especially important when you earn a living by engaging your mouth. His comment and subsequent reactions were crass, ill-judged, inappropriate and didn't manage to be entertaining either. That is why his employers should discipline him. How they do that is their decision.

Ive now had a bit of time to look into this story a bit and I find his sacking fickin hilarious.
He is indeed a right on lefty liberal, fully signed up to the whole PC agenda. I believe he is so dismissive of the Royals that he was vaguely aware one of them had a kid,and so decided to allude to how he thinks they are a bunch of upper class privileged twits, by using the chimp pic. Apparently he has a thing for using chimp pics to paint people in this light.
He has been hung by his own PC petard, and he cant even complain about it as that would be un PC.
Brilliant.  ;D ;D

The other side to this is, maybe he had no idea she, and her child are mixed race? I mean, I didn't until I read about the story today.

Or is this one of those "I've never seen star wars" moments where I find out I'm totally on my own on this?!

If you actively play in the spotlight of the court of public opinion then there are boundaries it is sensible not to cross. There are plenty of ways he could have done this & a few very stupids ways, one of which he used. :-[ No sympathy here, that he has fallen on his self inflicted sword.

One sensible rule is that none of us choose our genetic physical characteristics or ethnicity, they are bequeathed by our family lines & are generally a very poor way to score political points. Another is that we mostly are incharge of our actions through our minds, interface to the world & the use of uncommon sense, which may result in making good or bad decisions & these are quite rightly open to possible praise, ridicule & criticism.

Where I have over 500 followers on Twitter & do discuss controversial subjects like quality of UK politicians, Brexit & climate fraud, it doesn't get me into trouble where I follow the above self-imposed rules. :y

Ron.

They are strongly in the public eye/domain and in a highly privileged position, so hardly a level playing field. Not to defend Baker, but there were bigger guns aimed at him; did he really have to lose his job?

Ron.
It gets worse. I've just been informed, by the headmistress that it's 'Hearing impaired and mute'. FFS.  :(

If you are offended by anything I post, sorry. Just thought I'd get that in now.

.........
Or is this one of those "I've never seen star wars" moments where I find out I'm totally on my own on this?!

You're not on your own........ I've never seen Star Wars either.   ;D
I've seen star wars, but not convinced I've ever seen a picture of the royal in question.  I know shes a yank, so is she an African American (or whatever the politically correct term for a black American nowadays)?
AHEM!!  She is a 'person of colour'. ::)

I believe half-caste is the correct PC term.....or perhaps not.
I would expect a knock on the door from the PC police if I were you.

I try so hard. :-\
