Instrument issue, no speedo
« on: 31 July 2019, 22:27:21 »

I havent used the car for a couple of weeks, and now, most of the time.  the tach and speedo are not working.
Speedo flickers, tach doesnt.
It randomly came alive earlier but dead again.

Fuel and temp gauges fine, as are all warning lights and dash lights.
Looking on here it seems i have to replace the cluster, and it has to be from a 3.2?
Could anyone add to this?

Many Thanks

Palm of hand flat on right side of rev counter, and firmly press. That's where the cluster attaches to the car.

If the cluster is knocked, replacement needs to come from another FL (to match colour and temp gauge) V6 (to match rev counter and speedo).

She wont come back to life, so i will get a another one.
I have the smaller Vdo screen, so do i need the whole identical instrument panel?
Or can i just remove the cluster and switch?
I suppose there isnt a way to clock it to match the mileage on mine?

Cluster only :y

You can correct the mileage, but have had mixed results :-\

Make a note of the old and new mileages along with the invoice for the new cluster and stick it in the service history if it matters greatly  ;)

Have a similar issue on mine, but in my case it's the rev counter needle that flickers where the speedo needle stays still. What is the going rate for a replacement cluster?

Cheers.

Actually thinking about it she will never be sold.... Quite possibly the best car ive had.
Had her for 8 years now.
So i guess the mileage doesnt matter that much.

Might do if you need to put an Insurance  claim in or someone aims against you.

Theyre use any excuse to wriggle out of a claim.

I'm in the same situation, speedo quivers around zero and tacho dead.

Spoke to Cartronix in Waterlooville and they say they can't fix it.

What I have found out is this. Take the cluster out of the binnacle and plug it back into the dash.
Start her up and when the speedo starts quivering give the needle a tap/nudge and hey presto it all comes back to life.
Indicated speed correlates to gps as before.
First time I did it it lasted a month so I reassembled it all.
Now I have to do it every time I start up, so running with a bare cluster till I get something sorted.
No TID seems to do funny things to the climate control so might reassemble it all and download a speedometer app until a decent used set come up.

Plenty of stuff on the web about GM clusters in the US with the same faults, cured by fitting new stepper motors. Seems that over there GM had a bad batch of motors over a timeframe, and iirc issued a recall and suffered a class action to get them put right. I dont think the parts involved are the same as those used on our VDO units  though.

Just replace the panel. Sorted.
