Oil Leak Opinions Please
« on: 08 October 2011, 12:11:31 »

Some background.

2.6 V6, 106K

When I bought the car, the areas in the photos where there is now oil, just had black grease which had collected over time.

The car was owned by a mechanic who worked at a garage that specialise cam belt changes. Apparently the cam belt and tensioner was changed along with the rocker gaskets withing the last 10k.

When I tried to remove the old oil filter without success, oil appeared from around the filter housing, which I expected because I had interfered with it. Also under the filter, dripping from the crossmember and also at the front area under the pulleys, gathering on the shelf area above the sump.

I have converted the filter to a spin on and there is no oil from there now. At the same time I cleaned off all the oily areas.....front, crossmember, engine side etc.

Now the front area and crossmember drip with oil, it's clean oil and I am filling with a litre after 3 or 4, 15 miles trips to town and home. The area in front of the engine had been completely cleaned as well and looks like the oil is spraying onto it.

I had filled the engine with 5W 30 for a short period before changing the filter, then I have used 10w 40 from Vauxhall.

Pictures follow to help you see what I see.

Edit to add that the short trips are, in fact, 3 or 4, 30 mile trips.

So about 1 litre per 100 miles.

Longer distances, hot engine, don't seem to produce more oil loss

Clean it up and see if you can see where is it coming from.  Possible suspects are the lil level sensor and the cam shaft seals.  If you game find out where it is coming from you may have to bite the bullet and strip the belt and the timing hack plate to see.

Left the engine on idle, let it run at 2K for a while and left to idle.

Ran my fingers under the rocker covers and there was fresh oil!!!

I think I'll change the rocker gaskets.

Perhaps Vauxhall gaskets were not used last time.

Not familiar with this engine but will give it a go.

yup, cam covers leaking.

Replace with geniune gaskets & use black goo, clean out breathers, give it an oil change, job done  :y

.

Unfortunately that doesn't surprise me  :'( . I suspect that the 'expert' has used pattern gaskets when he replaced the cam covers, and they don't last. OE gaskets are around £80 from andyc, although they do sound expensive, it's cheaper in the long run as you only need do them once.

oil on the lip of oilpan (front) is either oil pressure sensor or crank oil seal.

I agree that it could be, but as the cam covers are leaking, it doesn't take long for gravity to take oil down to the top edge of the sump.  ;)

I agree that it could be, but as the cam covers are leaking, it doesn't take long for gravity to take oil down to the top edge of the sump.  ;)

But the engine is slightly tilted rearwards so any oil from cam covers will go more to the rear of engine and on exhaust manifolds. And, as in pics, quite a lot of oil in front of engine. My crank seal leaked and it looked JUST like in pics.  ;) And, as cam covers do not leak like "pouring oil" most of their leak would be as in other pics show  :y Well, we'll see what he ends up with.

I've had a wee read through and it is on e of those tricky ones to assess without actually seeing the car.
Is it possible that the rocker cover gasket was "pinched" when last replaced?
