Dropped both gearbox sumps this morning  .( when rain stopped  ) and replaced the filter/sump plug washer and refilled with 6.5lts of nice fresh Dex 3.

What came out was really nasty and black..hadn,t been replaced for over 110k so past its sell by date.

Took car for a 10 mile drive and the gearbox is so smooth now I didn,t realise how bad it was before.

Job well done and thanks for the excellent write ups in maintenance section

I do believe that the box holds almost double that from empty, so it might be a good idea to do another change in a few months time.

As Martian says, its only possible to get half the atf out via the sumps.

I often wondered if its possible to unhook an oil pipe somewhere and replace all the oil by running the engine to pump old atf out, while simultaneously pumping the new stuff in... Bit like a pas fluid change. Needs a feed and return somewhere, oil cooler to rad pipes perhaps   Never looked meself.

Defo a worthwhile service though.

The 'professionals' do this using the pipes to & from the cooler in (front of) the radiator.

Yep, In theory, block the breather and it will draw fluid in through one cooler pipe as it's pumped out of the other. Never tried it, though.

I always undid the two connections under the wheelarch where there are rubber connectors,
one to an empty container the other in a full container of new auto fluid, start engine and let it do it itself, used a 20litre container full for the new fluid, same for empying old stuff into,
easy to see how much goine in and whats come out

Worth perusing to swap all the fluid, but doesn't help with inspecting the sump contents, cleaning the magnet and silt out or cleaning the filter. Although i've never found anything in the filter anyway, as it's not fine enough.
