I don't agree tbh. Boris was stabbed in the back mercilessly by Gove, and left with no option. Farage knew that from his point of view it was mission accomplished, and that his role was unlikely to be a major one from now on.
He is in poor health, exhausted and has daily death threats. The final straw for him and his family may have been the rapper up north who said he was coming down south to rape Farages daughter, because of Brexit. He didn't specify whether it would be the 9 year old or the 15 year old, but still....
That kind of thing takes a toll on anyone after almost 20 years. Love him or loathe him ( he is definitely a Marmite man) hes not stupid, and probably picked the right moment to go, as he had been increasingly marginalised once the referendum campaign got underway.
In the grand scheme of things though, whether or not you agree with him, he has been the most significant UK political figure since Thatcher.
What has happened recently has happened because of him and him alone. The Tories would have squabbled about the issue on the backbenches from now until kingdom come, left to their own devices.
That may be a good or bad thing, depending on the individual point of view, but the significance cant be denied.
As for Cameron. He has never been very bright and this resulted in him painting himself into a corner with no escape route. He had to promise the referendum to stem the flow of supporters and members who were deserting to UKIP.
He assumed he would be in coalition again (at best) and would be able to blame the Libdems when he couldn't follow through on his promise.
When he went to have his negotiations he got nothing and he knew it, and thats when he made the fatal error. He should have came back and admitted he couldn't make headway and announced he would be neutral in the referendum. Instead he threw everything at the remain option, and assumed that the spin machine would work its magic once again.
People weren't stupid enough to believe he had achieved anything meaningful and knew he was lying, so they then didn't believe anything he said.
Once the result of the voters mistrust was known, his position was untenable and he had no choice but to step down. He could have saved himself, but his political radar was nowhere near sharp enough.
I suspect he was far too heavily influenced by Peter Mandelson, who was pretty much running the remain campaign in the background. Hence "project fear".
