HBV ***Possible silly Question alert***
« on: 25 October 2012, 13:09:03 »

This may be a silly question, but what is the purpose of the Heater Bypass Valve?

Reason I ask, i've got a 2003 2.2CD and had my HBV replace about 9 mths ago after the dreaded leaking.

Was chatting with my neighbour who has a 2001 2.2CDX, who told me he had just had the same problem - however he had not had a new valve installed. Instead he had just taken the old valve out and replaced it with some "T" pieces to join the pipework.

Will this cause him and problems?

It diverts coolant flow back to the engine when heat is not needed, eg with cc on lo.

This is interesting to me too, I still haven't replaced mine, I just keep topping up with coolant when the dash warning comes on!

No. Only difference will be that the air con won't blow quite as cold in summer, as it won't be able to stop hot water circulating in the heater matrix.

Block up the vacuum pipe, though, so you don't get an air leak. :y

Nah,its only a bit of plastic.Wash it out with soapy water, leave it to dry and then store it somewhere until you need it.

There's a rubber membrane in the hbv. Might benefit from some silicon spray. No carb cleaner though, it's plastic and rubber, which will likely melt.

It wont get as warm either (as the flow through the matrix will be much less as the return path will be less restrictive) and aircon wont get cold.
