I have had this problem for a while and want some more advis please.
When pulling away in D the auto gearbox message comes on the display.
If i manually do this in 2 or 3rd it will pull away slowly as expected. Does this point to a fault selector sensor, low auto fluid, or dis pack problem?

I have checked all sensors are connected, fuses etc, would the auto ecu also cause this issue.

paperclip test shows only 12 and 31 so nothing reported.

The proper path to follow for all auto gearbox issues is:

Check ATF level, if not OK then fill-up and see if problem stil exists.


If it does, replace the ATF and clean/replace the filter (see maintenance guides section)

This cures most of the problems, and only if it did not then you should look further i.e. ECU issues or problems with the box itself etc.

best start with fluid check, relatively simple procedure and its in the maintenance guide. hth

okay i am aware of the fluid how too, my questions is this.
the 13mm bolt, is it on the passenger side of the gearbox, where abouts...etc...anyone got a pic of where it is??

ok well i dont have axel stands and the jack is the bog standard one and dont trust getting under it. I have 1litre of ATF if anyone has some time and correct tools to assist in the job?

You need Dextron 111 gearbox oil

Anyone got a pic location of the bolt? How far back under the car is it. Not tried this before and not 100% sure which bolt etc

does the g/box warning come up before you start the car? also are the lights by the selector behaving themselves as in not all flashing?, when i had my famous g/box problem the check message came up before i started the engine, turned out it was the g/box ECU, but apparently this is a rare thing to go but dont discount it

No this only comes on when attempting to pull of in D as the revs rise.
All the selector lights are okay, i suspect it to be the fluid just dont have the tools etc to get under and resolve it.

The bolt (sump plug) is pretty obvious.  It is on the drivers sidewall of the big sump (on the sump, rather than the gearbox itself) - when you look at it you will see there is a big (squarish) sump and a small letterbox shaped one just in front.

Not sure of the exact amount ( sure some one on here will tell ya) but from what I can remember the proper oil is quite expensive 1 litre was over a tenner, and I needed nearly 4 litres to change the oil completely.

25 quid would get you a basic trolley jack and some stands ..  Its not a difficult job, just messy.

Any Dex 3 oil will do for top up really.   Fuchs is supposed to be the business - I got mine from GSF (German Swedish as was) for about 20 quid for 5 litres.
