How bad is old diesel?
A few years ago (5 or 6 years?) the oil companies started adding bio-diesel to the mix.
Talk at the time was that the bio content would/could support bug growth That stored diesel would turn to jelly and/or corrode the components in fuel injection pumps and injectors.
What are the chances that a Diesel car that has been stood for 5 years will ever run again?

Draining any water out of it would be a good start, but allow for filtering any biomass out of it. Diesel bug is a real thing and will kill pumps and injectors before you can say Oops.

Hundreds of millions of years? Tens of millions or just a few millions? ::)

Have experienced this a few times on plant and machinery, not seen it do any component damage but, you have to flush the system through and change all the filters.
Its a jelly like substance, there are biocide additive you can add to the diesel to stop it happening.

Quite prolific on boats. Either leave the tank 100% full or completely dry if leaving for a length of time. Moisture and oxygen are the two primary ingredients that diesel bug requires to form and the higher the percentage of biodiesel the more likely it is to form.

I have a can of petrol in my garage that must be 3 maybe 4 years old as it only gets used for my hedgetrimmer/brushcutter.
It doesn't seem to mind though. :)
