He was shot down over Hanoi.  ::)

But it was his time as a POW that he was known for in the Vietnam context, as he was beaten, tortured, spent years in solitary confinement and when he was offered early release when the North Vietnamese discovered his Father a US Navy Admiral, he refused insisting that others who were captured before him be released instead.  :o

Made some good films back in the day, always liked him as an actor saw him on the box 2 or 3 years ago just a mere shadow of his former self.  R. I. P. Burt.
