Going to take a look with maybe a purchase.
« on: 05 March 2024, 10:15:29 »

My sons neighbour has recently passed away he had an X reg Ford Granada Ghia from new always garaged and serviced regularly, his widow wants to sell it , so I'm of to Leeds today for a look, if it's as good as I'm told I quite fancy it as a "hobby car", no price mentioned yet 🚗🚗🚗

I am guessing that is the original box Granada from 70s/early 80s?

My old boss from a different life bought owned a MK2 2.8i Ghia auto.

I remember being envious, and impressed with the performance and luxury.

The MK2 is the best looking Granada.

Check very carefully for rot around the boot floor, across the bottom of the rear window, where the front foot wells meet the inner wing and across to the tunnel, above the diff... The rear mount can rot out, also the inner sills next to the rear subframe mounts.

If it's a 5 speed manual make sure that 5th works. That age requires LRP although Nick W might be able to recall the code for unleaded heads.

If it is the 2.8i and been sat for a while, expect some fettling. But given the woeful properties of modern fuels you can expect the rubber parts of the fuel system to be black cheese.

And from a maintenance perspective, the valve clearances need checking every annual service.

Fantastic cars though so should serve its next owner well. :y

Big bro had a 2.8i Ghia back in the day, in the obligatory gay gold. He didn't have it long, it was just too unreliable, but it was a box he needed to tick at that point in his life, having always been a Ford man up until that point.

He replaced it with a Chavalier SRi 130 when they first came out.  Faster, handled batter, less thirsty of fuel, and most importantly, bombproof from a reliability perspective.

Buyers guide, Mick

.

Thanks Steve, interesting read I've had 3 Granadas two Mk1s & 1 MK2, never had any problems with them but obviously they were a lot newer back then in the 70s/80s I have seen the one for sale when I've visited my lad & from across the road it looked really nice I quite like the idea of having one as a " toy ".

Had a MkII back in the '80's albeit the paupers 2 litre Pinto engined job :'( Still a nice car though.Always thought the MkI was best looking of the Granadas-especially the coupe but then pretty much anything pre-kermit Scorpio looked decent-even the MkIV Zephyr/Zodiac :o

Never had a four pot or diesel one, last was a 2.8i Ghia X manual saloon in Nimbus Grey over Strato Silver.

The 2.3 went a bit better with a 2.8 carb on it.

Sounds like a sound buy though :y

Got a 2.8 Ghia x stored up at the moment needs the bottom end rebuilt, top end already done with new valve seats. Body ok done a bit of welding on it years ago small bits on inner wing, back of inner sills (there is a guy does repair panels for that section if anyone needs them - topbaggers on bay of E), back window drain channels were starting to go so took rear screen out & fixed them. Bad bit is the back panel join to rear wing as water had been getting in boot and rotted that section. Got replacement panels for that bit.

A guy in the town has 2 black Ghia X executives, they used to be owned by the town provost years ago and a local businessman.

This one looks to be pretty rot free, hasn't been used since last October due to illness I didn't even try to start it , I won't attempt to drive it home will arrange for a transporter , have it thoroughly checked over mechanically when it's home, the bonnet has a nasty scratch which will have to be sorted the interior is mint( tan leather)

Always had a soft spot for the Ford Granada - used to drive them in the 80's...the 3.0ltr then the 2.8. The Ghia with the X pack was a car I dreamt of owning back then.
Unfortunately though, as with many Fords of that era, genuine spare parts are very difficult to source, and command extortionatey high prices. I have a friend with one, and whilst he loves and enjoys the car, he often comments about the difficulties with genuine Ford parts.

Yep, Bill was his regular driver.  :y  Oh, and it was originally a Consul (same as MK1 3.0 Granada), until the MK11 came along.  :)

Yes, I believe so.  :y  The 3000GT Consul was eventually replaced by a Granada 3.0S before the later MK2. I really do need to get out more.  ::)  ;D

In their day, the size of the Ford Granada MK1/MK2 was mahoosive compared to other vehicles of that era. It was a big comfortable car with a really big boot. My brother in law had a few Granada Ghia X Pack’s and loved them.  :y  Obviously they now seem low and smaller than modern big fat cars but they were big in their day.

Rangie,  if when purchased and at a later date you find the auto gearbox randomly changing gear or holding a gear, check the viscous coupling on the radiator cooling fan. The gearbox senses engine load so changes gear accordingly, but it has been known for the coupling to seize, causing engine load and erratic gear changes. Very simple to check, simply lift the bonnet, spin the fan and the fan should free-wheel easily by hand. If it doesn’t spin freely the coupling is seized. Not a big drama but it did catch my brother in law out the first time it happened on one of his.
Good luck with the purchase.  :y

Sounds like a plan, Mick. Can't wait to see the results when it's done. Are you going to drive it or keep it as a show car?

It will be driven on dry days only obviously, but I will definitely join an owners club so I can show it , I read quite a few articles about them and realised the only way to go with this was a total strip down the guy who looks after our Subaru is a Ford trained engineer so he will deal with all the mechanicals .

I personally think the 2.8i MkII is the pick of the bunch, and certainly the one I would prefer if I wanted a Grandad,.  In the obligatory gay Gold ;D

This one is midnight blue with tan leather, I'm going to keep the colour the same but although the seats look in good nick I know of someone local who can refurb them completely, I'm going to keep them the same colour but will have the leather in the "diamond quilted" pattern that can be seen on most Bentleys.

How original though?

Say, for example, you replace points and coil on a sixties classic for electronic ignition. Or modern tyres and brakes.

What Rangie describes sounds like an 'acceptable update' to me.

It's a cracker(  2.8 Ghia X) deposit paid will sort it all out when we get back from our cruise , lovely old lady to deal with , I've had one of these years ago but only a 2.3GL .
That apparently needs a full restoration...

Am I the only person who is confused  ???

If my memory of my brother-in-laws three MK2 2.8 Granada Ghia X’s is correct (he had two X’s and one X Executive), the standard Ghia X had flat leather (or cloth) and the X Executive had puffed up leather. The Executive seat looked like it had an additional topper and looked like someone had bolted a three piece suite in to the car and I always thought that it looked a bit overdone.
Each to their own though.  :y

The velour looked much nicer than the leather and was a pretty comfortable place to be :y

Agree re the Executive leather, it looks very '70s American... although it was a definite improvement over the standard leather which made the interior look quite bland, especially in grey.

Just wanted a slight difference to make it more "personalised" to me, everything else exactly to as new condition, even my missus liked driving the Granadas at one point we had two she had a 3.0 GL & I had the 3.0 Ghia, the MK2 I had was only a 2.3LX in gay gold 👍

Why does it require a full restoration then :-\

I mean, I understand that it might require some fettling and possibly some preventative things doing but that doesn't even come close to being a full restoration. Either it's immaculate or it's not...
