I use a splitter for TREs (the type with bolt, not fork type), and 2 hammers for idler etc

Same here. Works well for me.

Mk 1 Cavaliers were a good old car. My Dad bought a new one every year for the first three years of production.Which I found slightly bizarre. Even more bizarre was the fact that he bought the L version each time, despite my protests.  ::)
My current 3.2 Elite Omega is moving up the list of my favourites. It really is a very nice car, and doesn't seem to have taken any notice of the 175k miles on its clock.

A 3.2 I had in for breaking years ago had one in a similar state. The bottom end wasn't so much seized solid as welded into one mass.

Having said all that - It wouldn't do any harm to check the balljoint anyway, as I could have got a duff one.
In fact I should have already done so, as to assume is to make an ass of you and me.   ::)

In my case, droplinks are a week old. Bottom arms are genuine GM refurbed with new balljoints, new GM rear bushes and new polybushes at the front. Everything wishbone related seems to be exactly as it should be, and I would be surprised if it wasn't.
Only really leaves dampers or top mounts I think. They have done well in lastingWill find out when I get spring compressors and some time off work.

I insure with Aviva on alternate years. the year Im not with Aviva I go with whichever is the best deal on comparison sites, taking into account cashback availability.
Cashback with Aviva is the highest of the lot at around £65 - 70. but only for new customers. Hence insuring with them on alternate years.
Total bill to insure both cars is somewhere around £300 p.a.
