Autobox level plug.
« on: 12 March 2014, 21:35:36 »

I want to spend the minimum of time under the car (fat, awkward location, etc) so if anyone could tell me what size socket I need to for the level plug, that would save me a little aggro, please?

Ron.

Unless.............like some of them (one of mine actually ::)), it's on so tight that the flats get rounded, so it gets reduced to 12mm! :y

Mine was on FT!!!!!

Get a 13mm six sided socket and medium sized breaker bar. That worked best for me. :)

Thanks for your comments, gents; very helpful as usual.
The plug shouldn't be as tight as the proverbial duck's arse as I've had my garage top up the ATF a few times recently (gearbox leak), but now I want to do it myself due to pension-limited finances!
I just wanted to have everything ready to hand so as to spend the minimum amount of time under the car.....

Don't forget to check the level with the engine running  ;)

Thanks for the reminder, TG. What are the consequences of over-filling the gearbox? As my driveway isn't level, I can't guarantee to get the level right.

I can't see it been to much of a problem if its only a little over because iirc, the box does have a pressure vent pipe which ends up behind the engine somewhere  :-\

Tbh, I did mine yesterday with the back end on 2 Halfords specials ramps and the front end up on a couple of stands with no problems to a fat barstid like myself  ;D ;D

If you have the dosh for a couple of gallons of the oil, i'd drop the sumps, unbolt the filter (black plate with 3 13mm bolts) and give it a good clean with paraffin or some cheap white spirit first  :y
I did all that to mine yesterday including dumping 2 gallon of hot gearbox oil on my head  ;D ;D ;D
Cleaned the rubber seals up with some brake cleaner and smeared some instant gasket on the sump.
Put it back together and filled it up  :y
Went for a drive this morning .............. no leaks and it changes gear much better  :y :y

Thanks again, TG.
Is it an essential part of the procedure to anoint yourself with hot oil? I would like to follow your instructions to the letter, but if I could perhaps omit that stage?
According to my garage, the leak is coming from what looks like a blanking plate (but isn't) towards the rear of the bell-housing; does that sound reasonable?
Would replacing the ATF recondition the seals, as Wynn's and Lucas additives have not?
Sorry for all the questions.

Is it AT that's leaking or is it engine oil from a fubar'd rear crank shaft seal?  :-\

What's AT Andy? Is it ATF without the F?

Definitely ATF, Andy; after 2-3 weeks the gearbox starts to play up and requires a couple of litres of ATF to refill it!
The engine oil stays at the correct level throughout.
