Having done the cam cover gaskets 3 times its been fine for a few weeks now I got oil seeping onto the heat shield and rocker cover below the filler neck. But the oils above the gaskets and goes upto the filler neck could it be the filler neck seal? Ive taken it off and stuck the filler cap in the hole will that be ok?

No problem often suggested to avoid Mayo build up, but I would be suprised if thats where the oil is coming from.check gaskets again

Does sound like gaskets $:-\$
If its got to the stage of leaking onto the heat shield, check the plug wells

If not gaskets could be o-ring seals on bottom of filler neck or on cap (same sized o-rings on both)

Is the locking tab on the filler neck still present? If it snaps off the filler can work out slightly, allowing oil out...

Did this to mine

fitting the cap to the cam cover should rule this out

Its the gasket again on the passenger side its bilowing smoke and used a litre of oil

Are you using Genuine gaskets, and did you do the breathers?

yes used genuine and cleaned breathers. the drivers side has been fine. its just the passenger side that wont last. the plug wells are dry and i cant see any oil leaking but theres loads of smoke

I have had a filler neck leak on the welded join about 2/3rds of way up it. I did as devonscott has done, though makes filling it with oil a pain, so I normally put the neck back on for that.

well i ordered another set of gaskets for that bank ansd used my 40pound voucher. and will try again and double check for any signs of cracks etc. when i cleaned the breathers i took all the pipes off and soaked in carb spray and they were all then clear and dry and put a drill bit ionto the breather box and poked it around. i presume thats correct

I have a one litre bottle with the bottom cut off for that very purpose, screws nicely into the filler neck

Just blast them through with carb cleaner as well

this is the side of the rocker cover where the leak appears to be and the cover isnt straight. is this right?

Perhaps you should consider another cover from one of our breakers, just in case, before wasting more gaskets?

No, don't do that! I think the general rule is that sealant is only used sparingly and at certain points, as per the guide

are all the cam cover gaskets the same. ie 2.5 3.0 2.6 3.2 v6. the parts numbers on the how to are for the two seperate gaskets per bank which is what ive fitted to my 2.6. but someones just mentioned a 2.6 with one complete gasket.

If your gasket is pretty new (and genuine GM) you should be ok to reuse it.

.ive been offered a new cam cover but he said the gasket was one complete gasket not 2 seperate ones. i wasnt aware of any variations

I think the gaskets now come as one piece (my last one did anyway) but it is actually two gaskets joined together - like an old Airfix kit, if you know what I mean?
You just need to separate the two parts

There is an o ring in the filler neck base. Seen these leak before.

And no. The sides of the cam cover are not straight. Yours is normal ime.
