Omega 2.2 DTI heater plugs
« on: 18 April 2010, 15:22:08 »

Hi. Can anyone explain why on my 2.2 Dti the cold start heater plugs come on when you first go to start the car from cold and the engine fires up OK. If you stop it before it is warmed up and go to restart it the heater plug light does not light up and the car needs to be wound over considerably to start. Obviously on the 2nd attempt the heater plugs are not working. Go back to the car after it has been standing for a while they work OK. Is there some sort of timer that is causing this???? Any help would as always be appreciated. Ian

Not sure if or when they were replaced. The car has done 155,000.

Do you get the EML light on? I know it's a different car, but still Vauxhall, my 1.7TD Astra started to put the EML shotly after I'd set off from cold, but soon went off again. The code was something to do with glowplugs, my multi-meter (& OOF  ;)) found my duff glow plug & all was well again.  :y  :y  :y

My problem is them not coming on sometimes as detailed in the original post. Its really strange. It is not as if there is a faulty glow plug as the light just does not come on sometimes and others it does!!

Hi
I suffered this problem myself for several years. It was erradicated when the battery finaly gave up and was replaced. I believe that the  battery voltage is critical  and when battery is aged (9 years in my case) it just can not cut it.

Note that my symptoms were exactly like yours and car would always start, although considerable cranking required after original cold start. From cranking speed, I had never suspected poor battery performance, there was nothing lethargic about it at all. In Fact it would start very well at -6 degrees or so. No codes were stored as a result of this malfuntion.
On changing battery, I immediatly noticed improvement in MPG, and brightness of headlights !

Suppose you could try jumping up an additional battery  after original cold start to prove it?

 Best of luck!
