I thought I'd give the rocket fuel unleaded a go. Even a man as poverty stricken as myself can afford an extra 'couple of pence' on each litre.

Er....no actually.

Ordinary Unleaded ....103.9 ppl

Super unleaded...........119.p ppl. . 16p a litre extra.

I doubt it would make any difference.

My 1800 GDi Legnum is the only car I've tried 'super unleaded' on that actually made a noticeable difference. That gave it a bit of extra oomph when heavily loaded(ie more than just me in it), but the improvement was small and not worth the cost in general use. So I only ever bothered when I used it on holiday.

My Stage 3 Saab 9-5 Aero ran much better on 98RON or above, and achieved about 27-28mpg mixed, versus 25-26 on regular. I wonder if it was to do with the previous owner (who had it taken to stage 3) running it on super and hence being on super when it was mapped? 

I don't really know enough about such things to know if it made a difference. Once I have to put the spanners down and pick up a laptop I tend to be out of my depth!

Maybe try Tesco Super? The difference was about 6p last time I checked. Depends where you are in the country though I guess.

I used SHell for a week or two, but realised that in tests Tesco's came out the same/slightly above the 'big boys' motor spirit. (and where do we think Tesco gets it from in the first place? there are certainly no Tesco owned oil refineries near me, that's for sure)

Reason I advocate the super unleaded stuff is because near me the standard Petrol is 103-104, and the Tesco is 109, so 4% difference.

Wouldn't personally bother with the BP/Shell stuff, based purely on cost. Beru HT leads vs 'GM' HT leads... same difference.

Ran my 1.4 106 on Vpower...
It went better, and managed about 40miles more per tank... The extra range just about covered the price difference, so net gain was limited to a slightly better throttle response...

Several of the Fuel storage depots have all sorts of tescos,shell ,asda,morisons etc wagons turning up - using the same loading bays - but am told the 'cheaper' asda type fuels are just about within spec, whearas the premium fuels have a bit more of the good additives in them. however I would only consider buying a premium diesel in a cold winter (and hopefully not waxing up) .

Even with the help of a turbocharger my car manages only 89 BHP per litre. So I'm guessing the performance gains would be small.

Modern superbikes are giving 200 BHP per litre without forced induction.

I did 4 fill ups of 20L each of the Shell VPower on the 1.6 Tigra recently, they where giving away 1000 points for a min of 4 fills which worked out more than enough to cover the additional costs over normal Unleaded.

I was quite impressed with the results took my mpg up from around the normal 38 to 42 mpg and managed to hit the magic 50mpg.

The only car I have ever had that showed a noticeable difference by using super unleaded was an FTO jap import

You should run the Signum on Tesco momentum 99.

I've found in mine using Vpower or super BP makes no difference to 95 octane, but running on 99 the engine seems to run smoother and pull better.

There is no real increase in mpg (maybe 20 miles per tank) and doubt there is any more power but it definitely runs better especially in heavy traffic.

That's a test over the last 2 years try different fuels for a month - circa 2k miles- at a time over all sorts of conditions

Would also add re-gapping the plugs to 0.8mm also makes it run and pull better

My Smart gets Tesco's Momentum ...... the tank's only 35 litres so the difference in cost per tank is negligible ...... and the car seems to run better on it
