Omega General Help / Re: 2002 2.2 Petrol misfire when warm
« on: 02 May 2011, 20:56:06 »
sounds like leads or wiring breaking down as it gets warm check for chaffing on the loom around the maf sensor because if that was moved and all was good for a couple of days it could be around there somewhere

tried unplugging the new siemens maf sensor and still no joy.
One thing I did try was get the engine red hot and pour redex down into each cylinder and left it for 30 mins, the took rocker cover off and put a bit of redex on each valve whilst closed marking the level and left it for about 5 mins each time and hardly any dissapeared except for some which vapourised from the hot engine. When I reassembled and fired it up it sounded normal for a minute then dropped back down to its fluctuating 500 to 600 rpms. I'm gonna give it a good run on motorway later to see if that will cure it.
Im getting stuck what to do next. Also there's only a full circle on camshaft outer pulley and a half moon on timing cover and thats at about 10 o'clock.

i'm geussing here as i am yet to do my belt (2000km overdue :()but i would say the moon and the circle would need to be in the vicinity of one another!! try getting the top lined up and see where they sit? but i'm still geussing at a burnt valve as that redex  may have sealed the valve enough to combust a few times, did you take your plugs out again and check them for wetness, i would start with the no.4! but i would definately get a compression check done at this point

compression test takes no time at all and can't imagine it costing 100 quid! or buy one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PETROL-ENGINE-AUTOMOTIVE-COMPRESSION-TESTER-GAUGE-KIT-/320704358898?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4aab7829f2 i geuss with the rocker cover off you could put some thin oil or other thin lubricant on the suspect valve when they are closed and see if it disappears after a while but it does make me wonder if there's not a bad connection somewhere within īthe wires going to the maf sensor have you tried unpugging and replugging to see if it again comes back to normal idle

Crank has a semi-circle notch on the outer pulley edge, that should point to 6 o'clock, there is a small cut out on the rear cambelt cover. (i copied this from vxforums) but i am geussing that slipping a tooth would show more mis-firing across the board not just on one cylinder,HTH :(

i don't know how advanced the omega is in ecu control but when a cylinder on my wifes polo doesn't fire it cuts the fuel to that cylinder as far as i'm aware!! but i geuss if you're not storing a code the ecu thinks all is good!!

215
next stop then compression test ;) and probably if that's o.k then a code reading session idoubt the paper clip trick will work as it's a four pot but you can try http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1236032406

is it down on power as well? i had a volvo which had burnt a valve and idled erratic but at around 2000 rpm sounded fine but it does sound like a firing problem on no.4 if it was wet check the wiring coming from the back of the coil pack for chffing and check the connectors are in good nick as well

how did the old plugs look when you took them out? did you have any symptoms on them?

have you checked that there isn't a spring broken?  could also be a knackered top mount/top mount bearing.  either way both fairly easy jobs provided you have a decent road spring compressor.  The ones I have are things my dad made many years ago.  they slip off the springs quite regularly, goes off like a shotgun blast.  thankfully never had 3 lbs of steel in my face using them yet
holy sh#t for the sake of a tennner you risk that! op get it up in the air with a crow bar and check all the joints my mechanic also uses massive pipe wrench to press things down! to check for play! or try rocking the car up and down to see if you can get the same knocking noise while stationary it could be a knackered shock

Intersted in this, current car is ok, but have witnessed play in others and not sure where to start.
2woody re aligned my steering column and I was able to see some areas that might cause play, but none that would wear as I understood it.

There must be a bush or baring behind the top section of the column surely?
There is a bush  at the top of the colum that is held in place with 1 sheer bolt and a normal nut.
It's a pure pig to get off and its also an MOT failure :-[

well i won't be offering any refunds then!!

o.k had the cowling off today it seems the movement goes only down to the first plastic ball joint which joins the column to allow for tilting , i'm geussing it's in the tilt mechanism somewhere but i don't have the time or patience to pull it all apart as it's up for sale tomorrow and hopefully some foreigner will come and export my car!! looking around on the net it seems that the tilt mechanism is a good suspect also when the steering lock is on it doesn't have any play so the lock is holding everything in place.
i think it's along these lines have a look here:http://www.sn95mustangs.com/index.php?page=articles&op=readArticle&id=59&title=Steering-Column-Fix

Shoot me if I'm stating the obvious but is the steering height adjuster properly located?  The lever should be sprung to return away from the driver.
i'll get me gun! ;) no it's not the adjustment lever as i have set it to different levels to check it's not only there in one spot but i will check to see it's locating properly tomorrow as i geuss if whatever holds this in place is worn........food for thought!

thanks for the replies, it's definately up and down movement on the steering wheel (which is what i meant to say in the first post!!) and must say very noticeable and when i wiggle it it seems to go down the whole column could it be just loose? and if i remove the plastics will i be able to see it, i geuss that's my first port of call anyway, Kevin mentioned a bearing on the column outer does anyone know if these are replaceable, sorry for all the questions tia.
