Reaction Times test... 'fun'
« on: 09 December 2015, 12:03:38 »

Not sure it's up there with a naked skydive into a barrel full of soaped up glamour models, but here's a fun little reaction time test

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3320226/What-driving-age-Emergency-stop-game-tests-reflexes-road-reveal-old-driver-are.html

About as scientific as hearing what another bloke in the pub's mate reckons about the moon landings, but interesting nonetheless.  :)

You old grandad... 291 milliseconds  :y

Not that reaction times aren't important, but I did watch a program where they took an average person on the street and a wimbledon winning tennis player and tested the one against the other. Basically they were the same. Reaction times are effectively 'preprgrammed in' to us as human beings. A tennis player appears to have better reaction time (same for a goalkeeper etc) because they predict where the ball is going before it leaves the foot/bat/racket.

Mind, that all being said, me and Stemo appear to be in the 'Airbag/pretensioner deployment' category  :D  8)

27 first, 22 second. Not bad, I'm 37.

Thought I was going to need them this morning when a large van (I missed the make - maybe an older Sprinter) decided he wanted to do significantly more than 50mph through the M3 roadworks and went from behind me in lane 3 to in front of me in lane 1 then back to lane 3 only narrowly (by inches, if that) avoiding clipping the rear corner of the car in front of me as he snaked through the gap which would have likely turned that car around and started a nice game of vehicular pinball.

Anyway.. I'll take 27. Clearly that's the only bit of me that young..  ;D

Under-steer is when the front of the car hits the wall, and over-steer is when the rear of the car hits the wall.
Power is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how much of the wall you take with you.

 :y

That story, aaronjb, just proves that reaction times are one thing.. but what you do with those reaction times in the real world are what matter. If you're able to panic within 0.25 of a second that's far, far worse than taking a full second to take the correct action. The fact you're not typing this via your phone in a hospital bed proves this  :y (unless you are typing this from a hospital bed??   :-\ :D ) Glad you're still with us  :y
