Golf GTD
« on: 03 May 2021, 18:45:03 »

Been looking at these as a replacement for wifey's astra later this year. Can't believe the price of a three year old, automatic one, very expensive car.

Possibly the most pointless car of all time, the harshness of a GTi ride with a soot chucker under the bonnet

Non gti handles and rides well. I love my 2.0 diesel and auto.  Just done 520 km today on mixed roads.. why not have another Astra Zeneca?

No point, might as well keep this one as get another. They've stopped doing anything with a decent diesel now.

One of my team had one, he gave me a ride in it once, and only once. Thankfully he swapped it not long after for a w212 diesel, which was much better to be a passenger in.

It just isn't fast enough to justify that level of discomfort. If you really must have that engine and box combo, I would have the Octavia vrs, or the superb.

If not, a non-GTD diesel golf would be better in almost every respect.  :D

Soot chucker is the whole point. 55mpg and 0-60 in 7.2s. But plenty of time to consider yet, her astra has another 8 months on the Vx warranty I took out.

Octavia has 95% of the performance and 100% more comfort. But then I'm not female, so I can't appreciate the aesthetics.

Alternatively, maybe take the astra to a young man with his hat on backwards who will give it GTD levels of poke.

Hers is the K with 1.6 135 bhp engine, but you're missing the female point here. Astra is 66 plate, therefore, old now. Golf looks nice, esp that one with GTD written on the front.  ;D

Swmbo says I should get rid of all three of mine and buy a nice little Mini Metro, which to her is the more modern version of the 1964 Mini she had as her first car.  ;D
When I mentioned they stopped making them nearly 30 years ago she looked at me like Im some sort of remedial.  ::)

The only thing that could sway it for me is reliability. I'm not saying the golf is not reliable but, if I don't fight her on it (she'll really dig her heels in then) but mention the most important thing is her getting to work (she loves that job with a passion) and I'm not really sure...I've heard some stories...it's up to her, of course...... ::)

Exactly, slow and harsh, if diesel is the need then avoid the GT spec and getting something that's not gong to shake every bone in the body

MMMMMM I have a Skoda Yeti that is underneath a Golf 4 wheel drive with a 170 HP diesel , its not slow as it ran a 15.2 sec on the drag strip . Yes it will do 60 mpg but only if I get stuck behind some slow ******* , normally 45 but I dont drive slow!!
Daughter has a Golf GTD and she loves it but then she drives like me---- (both ex drag racers) . And before you make comments the Yeti is butt ugly but so practical .
From my experience is no worse to work on than the modern Ashtray and I never found them nice to drive. Vague speedo markings as well , we had a Astra diesel run about at work thats 3 years old now and the sat nav/ display screen blew up twice.

Why not go  for a petrol turbo rather than this turbo derv crap?.

Diesels have gone form saving the planet 10 years ago to killing the planet today.

Personally speaking I'd  only go the derv route if the car could be bought for buttons.

If you like the Golf go for the Golf R.......about £300 PCM on a PCP deal*

Looking for something for Mrs O currently, looks like it's going to be a Seat Ateca 2.0 tdi and possibly the 4wd version. We had a 1.0 petrol one on lease a few years back which was great but I don't trust the longevity of the little 3 cylinder turbo engines.

Over the course of a year, it will save around £500 in fuel bills. The performance of the diesel is often better than the petrol., and they are a strong engine. In my opinion, of course.

Might be some fun in winter time then.  :y ;D
One of her teachers lived at the bottom of a hill. She bought a BMW1 and had to walk up the hill and get a bus from December to February.  ;D

Not a problem on the latest model as its front wheel drive (its a Mini in drag)

Speaking of the Mini. I followed a Mini Countryman the other day. That is one ugly f*ucker..... :( :(

Looking for something for Mrs O currently, looks like it's going to be a Seat Ateca 2.0 tdi and possibly the 4wd version. We had a 1.0 petrol one on lease a few years back which was great but I don't trust the longevity of the little 3 cylinder turbo engines.

Good choice, Jon, take no notice of moneybags  ;D

Why not go  for a petrol turbo rather than this turbo derv crap?.

Diesels have gone form saving the planet 10 years ago to killing the planet today.

Personally speaking I'd  only go the derv route if the car could be bought for buttons.

If you like the Golf go for the Golf R.......about £300 PCM on a PCP deal*

* In addition to a large deposit. :D 8)
Over the course of a year, it will save around £500 in fuel bills. The performance of the diesel is often better than the petrol., and they are a strong engine. In my opinion, of course.

A mere bagatelle for a man of your means and wealth. :)

She works hard. Let her buy what she wants. As my old Mum used to say "theres no pockets in shrouds". :)
You're right, of course, Albs  :y
Just had a thought about the 320d. RWD, that would keep her on her toes  ;D

Lack of compliant suspension though, much like the Gtd

I was led to believe the new wonder car from 1959 was named 'Mini'  because of it's compact size.

The 2021 Mini Countryman is the size of an ocean going liner. ::)

I've got an idea.....they could rename the larger Mini, ...... 'Maxi'.......pretty sure that name has never been used before. ::) ::)

Yes. Most other models are growing in size too, but the mini is definitely on better steroids.

thanks to VWs ridiculous design team.
I don't normally stick up for VAG, as, lets face it, they make utter shite thats blingy enough to be desirable by idiots.  However, in fairness to VW, at least they do have design teams, unlike you beloved Mercedes "lets pick random items from the bilstein catalogue and see if that works" Benz.

A colleague has a Cooper S, and was most put out when a lumbering old big saloon left him for dust in a straight line, after saying how it was the fastest thing on 4 wheels.

He's bent, obviously.

My neighbour has one as well, but she's a girl, so thats fine.
