Omega General Help / ATF Sump - Liquid gasket
« on: 04 October 2008, 21:50:37 »
Trying to source some of this goo..

I read somewhere on here that Loctite 598 is the recommended product.   Halfords list it but when I asked for it they produced a tube of Loctite 5910 (apparently they both have the same Halfords code :-?).

I read the description while the man was checking and the 5910 does sound appropriate as far as I can see.

and from Loctite's web site:
5910 Designed primarily for flange sealing with good oil resistance ..... . Application examples: stamped sheet metal covers (timing covers and oil sumps).

Any opinions?

Omega General Help / Exhaust fitting
« on: 17 July 2008, 13:15:35 »
Just failed mot on hole in the rh central box :'( (from the noise when driving home the hole was definately a lot bigger than on the way to the mot..)

So a couple of questions:

for a cat back system
- is there a gasket or sealing compound needed between the flanges at the front (that mate with the cat section)?
- assuming the bolts at the front shear, what size replacements do I need?
- is it better to assemble the 3 sections on the ground and then lift into place, or front sections first and then the back box?

Cheers

Omega General Help / Overheating
« on: 09 June 2008, 12:54:23 »
I drove into London on Saturday (a mistake I make about once a year..).   Quite warm weather and large amount of traffic jams.

The running temp in the 3.0 is usually around 95 - 97, but gradually rose over about half an hour to >100 on the guage.   (I switched off at that point)

I know the fan (at least one of them) is working as it runs on for a couple of minutes after switching off, but I wasn't in a position at the time to hop out and check if it was going full blast (they are 2 speed, aren't they?).

In my old 2L when the temp got up to 98 or so in traffic, the fan would come on and the temp would come down very quickly - but this doesn't seem to be happening.

Any suggestions?

Omega General Help / Brake Pad Wear Sensor
« on: 04 January 2008, 10:59:41 »
Need to source a pair of wear sensors..

I just phoned my local factor who asked if I had Lucas or ATE pads.
Off hand I don't know. I recall the early 2L's had a different pad but thought everything else was the same.

So can anyone advise what my 2.5 '98 will have? or how I can find out?

Cheers,
Ian

Omega General Help / Steering Idler
« on: 11 December 2007, 17:34:33 »
I'm going to be tackling the idler tonight (in the cold, dark, hopefully not wet....).

First challenge will be to loosen the 18mm nut on the connection to the centre tie bar (although the guide says its 19mm, its defo 18mm and my 19mm spanner slips (and of course my set only has 17 and 19mm sizes.... grr).  Hopefully my big adjustable will do it.

Assuming I can release that joint using the Ronni McB guide - ie lever tie bar and whack the idler,  should the other joint (rear joint to the mounting bracket) just pop off or do I need to use a splitter of some sort on it? (its not mentioned in the guide).

Cheers,
Ian

Omega General Help / Positioning rear axle stands
« on: 08 December 2007, 10:24:02 »
Can someone please confirm it is acceptable to position axle stands under the box section of the rear subframe as I believe Mark has done in the photos in the this guide? http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564750

Or is the trailing arm a better bet?   This is for my handbrake work so no suspension access issues.

Cheers

Omega General Help / MOT fail - steering idler and handbrake
« on: 06 December 2007, 14:49:19 »
Well my new Elite failed its mot today :'(

Steering idler - first one I have to do of these.  I'm pretty sure there is a maint guide,  but can someone point me in the best direction for the part please?

Handbrake ineffective both sides - I hate Omega handbrakes.   Sure enough if I stop on a hill, handbrake on in neutral it slips back.  Only if I pull on the lever with both hands can I apply it hard enough to hold the car.   On releasing it was squeeking a fair bit.    Is this likely to be sticking mechanism, glazed/worn shoes - any ideas before I strip it down?

Cheers,

Ian

Omega General Help / Condensation
« on: 27 November 2007, 10:49:44 »
Since the weather got colder/damper, I find if I take the Elite saloon on a trip , park for say an hour, that when I get back the car is heavily misted up, particularly the rear window.     It clears pretty quickly although if climate is off ,it does start to mist up along the side windows.

Neither of my estates have done this.   There is no trace/smell etc of damp in the car at all, wet carpets etc, and I have checked the scuttle drain which is bone dry.

Any ideas?

.. and no, I don't think anyone has been borrwing the back seat for a little hanky panky ;) (which is certainly what it looks like from outside!)

Omega General Help / Clonking from rear
« on: 06 November 2007, 11:43:50 »
When going round a right hand bend (only) - eg roundabout -  I have started to get a distinct knock-knock-knocking noise from the rear end.  Pretty sure its coming from the near side so presumably when something is loaded due to the cornering.

I've had a superficial look in less than ideal conditions and can't see anything amiss - broken spring etc.
Tried rocking/bouncing the car and the rear wheel although not had a chance to jack it up yet - again nothing obvious.

Suggestions?

Omega General Help / V6 ICV
« on: 05 November 2007, 15:34:13 »
think I need to clean my ICV...

I've got a small but perceptable variation in idle - the tacho needle hardly moves but the engine tone is a giveaway.

I've never taken the ICV off the plenum before,  so firstly , how does it come off (is a there a bolt somewhere?) and are there any tips for cleaning it?

Can someone advise which fuse it is?  Seems that neither driver nor passenger seat heaters are working in my Elite.

Omega General Help / Fuel Problem?
« on: 15 October 2007, 15:48:12 »
I'm not sure if I have a problem or not on my 3.0.. :-/

- When relieving the fuel rail pressure prior to removal (when changing cam cover seals),  I got nothing out of the valve at all (my 2.5 gave a squirt of fuel).   Car had been sitting for a week but I was still surprised.
- When I pulled fuse 18 to disable the fuel pump to change fuel filter the engine died instantly - my 2.5 ran on for a few seconds, I assume as the remaining fuel/pressure disapated.
- I've convinced myself there is a faint smell of fuel above the offside of the engine.

No visible leaks, and seems to start and run ok (although only had the car on the road a couple of weeks so not much to compare it to).

Do I have a problem?  I'm wondering if injectors are leaking or something of the kind..

Omega General Help / Elite centre armrest
« on: 27 September 2007, 18:05:16 »
I think something is missing on mine (98 mini facelift).   Even so seems pretty weird.

The cover hinges forwards and simultaneously rotates into one's 6 pack beer gut for some reason.
Underneath there is a hole which goes down into the bowels of the car - I am sure there should be some insert that fits into here.

Can anyone enlighten me?
- what is supposed to be under the cover?
- what is the articulated cover all about?

Cheers!

Omega General Help / Autobox sump
« on: 06 September 2007, 17:56:30 »
I have seen mention of using gasket compound (red Hermatite stuff?) instead of a replacement sump gasket.

Vx don't have the small sump gasket in stock and I want to get on with the job.

Can anyone who has tried this confirm its ok please?

Thx
Ian

Omega General Help / Autobox newbie questions
« on: 02 September 2007, 09:25:40 »
First time with an autobox fluid change..

I have a few questions would appreciate any advice from those who've been there before me :y

- Filter
I understand that its possible to clean and reuse the filter.  Haynes mentioned 'solvent' and I think someone on here used white spirit.   What is recommended?  Obviously I don't want to leave any residue which may harm the new Dex 3.

Haynes also mentions a 'seal' .  Is this a small oring type affair that sits around the key slot hole in the top of the filter?  If so, this remained on the main body of the transmission - there are traces of glue on the filter.   Does this mean I need a new filter, as BoL says the seal is not available on its own..?

- oil
I drained about 5L out including both sumps.   Is that about right?   If I get 6L to refill, will that be enough?

- gaskets
been using a paint scraper to remove the old gasket from the sumps and body - its hard going to remove all the crap esp. as some of the gasket is stuck to the sump rim in between the two sumps.  Is there a solvent that will clean up the surfaces nicely?

Cheers,

Ian
