Omega General Help / Barsteward to start
« on: 28 June 2009, 19:06:48 »
Happened over the last week or so - real s*d to start from cold - warm ok.  Turns over, trys to start, sometimes small backfire, then starts.

Checked codes - none stored.  Had new cambelt kit 5K ago - rechecked that today, timing still spot on.
New Vx crank sensor fitted recently about 3K ago (to cure code 19).
When started pulls well revs to red line ok.  Fuel consumption normal.
Checked plug leads (dry and ok), new Vx plugs fitted 5K miles ago.
No air leaks - checked all vac pipes on.
Fitted new egr gasket - previous was blowing.

Coil pack?  Fuel? (new filter fitted 4K miles ago) - any ideas?

Got a long crack nearside bottom corner of my Elites windscreen.  My insurers use either Autoglass or Auto Windscreens.  Anyone had experience of either?

Omega General Help / Engine Management Light

1998 2.5V6 Elite Auto Estate

Keep getting EML coming on intermittantly.

Stored codes 74 MAF - Air Flow Sensor (AFS) High voltage.  Cleared code light now off.

The plug for MAF sensor doesn't lock into socket (plastic lock broken) & I've cable tied it to hold it in.  Is this likely to be reason?

Omega General Help / Aux Belt
« on: 04 April 2009, 18:51:22 »
Just more or less sorted the Estate when the saloon (1998 2.5 Elite) plays up.  On my way home this morning (about ½mile from home) and smell of burning rubber and smoke into cabin.

Got home opened bonnet and aux belt is shredded into long thin bits.  Looked at tensioner and half of it appears missing.  Only bearing left - cage cpollapsed and bearing seized melting plastic parts on tensioner.  Part of belt still driving!! - a bit about 10mm wide.

To say I'm p*ssed off is an understatement!!  Got bits off ok - no other apparent damage luckily. :)

Believe part nº for belt (a/c) is 93181720.  Could someone please confirm and advise part nºand TC price for tensioner pulley.

Thanks

Omega General Help / Codes
« on: 04 April 2009, 18:43:34 »
1998 2.5 Elite Estate.

Just done oil cooler & fitted new crank sensor.

Today eml came on while driving, no other issues.

Checked codes - 31 (guess normal) and 74 MAF high voltage.  Cleared codes seems ok now.

Also checked all elec plugs to MAF - ok.

Car starts on the button (since crank sensor changed - before poor starting) and seems to run ok.

Any opinions re the 74 code?

Omega General Help / MOT et alia
« on: 31 March 2009, 01:32:17 »
Well the Estate passed MOT OK on saturday.

Sunday flushed out cooling system (loads of oil!!), whipped oil cooler out and replaced, did breathers and fitted new oil cooler.
Monday night filled up with water (after waiting 24 hours for sealer to go off - water only as will drain & fill with antifreeze later in week) - no apparent leaks.  BUT bloo*y car wont fire up.
Found a vac pipe that had come disconnected - made no difference when connected.

Cheapo Tech 2 says code 19 crank sensor.  B*gger, bu**er, bugg*r, guess what I'll be fitting tomorrow night!!

Omega General Help / Autobox problems
« on: 18 January 2009, 22:49:10 »
Re 1998 2.5V6 Auto saloon have been having problems with autobox recently.

Symptoms are changes become clunky and lack of drive in lower gears (revs as if “clutch slipping on manual box car” then engages ok).  Cause appears to be lack of ATF in box.  I have a bad leak and have only just identified source.

This first happened before Christmas and “topped” box up (2 lits Dex3) and gearbox behaving normally.  Noted still leaking though.

Earlier this week went to London and back – box perfectly ok on journey down but starting to play up about 15 miles from home on way back.

Next day couldn’t get any drive in reverse or drive.  Checked ATF and “topped” up again – another 2 litres.  Box now behaving perfectly.

Obviously need to sort leakage asap.

Top of box completely dry as is rear of box.  Sumps – no leakage and bolts tight.  Cooler pipes dry.  Leak appears to be from front of box – on removing rubber blanking plug can feel “wetness” inside bell housing and fluid appears to be escaping through a drainage slot forward? of rubber bung by the two downward facing studs and nuts.

Guess there is a seal on input shaft that has failed.

Would appreciate any info/assistance/pics on removing gearbox (do cats have to come off – looks like enough space between) as well as confirmation of diagnosis, pics etc on replacing seal.

What parts am I likely to need – part nºs would help.  Also anyone got a schematic of gearbox?

Sorry for the long post but any assistance gratefully received - thanx

Omega General Help / Cam belts
« on: 27 September 2008, 18:00:42 »
Did cambelts on both V6s back in August - so both have a few miles under their belts now.

Any mileage in checking timing and tensioning on both or just leave em for another 40K?

Omega General Help / Brake Pads
« on: 23 September 2008, 15:44:09 »
On my 1998 Elite saloon front callipers/pads are Lucas pad part nº 9192124.
On the 1998 Elite Estate (both are V6s) front pads different shape - have "ears".  Believe they are ATE/Teves callipers/pads. Vx say only one type of pad (Lucas) - I say different having seen both types!!

Most aftermarket pad suppliers list both types for V6 Omegas.

Am I right in thinking Vx part nº for ATE pads is 91921213?

TIA

Omega General Help / Too good to be true
« on: 23 August 2008, 15:25:10 »
Having just changed cam belt yesterday on the V6 saloon all appeared ok - smoother, more responsive.

Today, stated ok, went out and on the way home engine died going into a quick roundabout - bl**dy heavy steering with no power assistance, same for the brakes.  Wouldn't restart straight away - 5mins later fired and ran ok.  Drove home OK.  Car has stalled a couple of times prior to cam belt change usually when parking at slow speeds.

Checked codes at home - showed the dreaded code 19 - crank sensor - fits the symptoms.  Can't get one till Tuesday but will fit one then.

Anyway wiped the code and checked for gearbox codes etc - all clear.  Rechecked engine (running) & got  . . . .

Code 57 - Idle Speed Control Valve (ISCV) Interruption  and
Code 165 - ????

Any thoughts? - or is this a spurious code as a result of the original 19?

Omega General Help / V6 Cam Belt Change
« on: 22 August 2008, 20:49:05 »
Well, done my first V6 cam belt change today - took 5 hours start to finish.  Have to day the OOF DVD is first class - just wish my pulleys came off as easily as on the DVD - had to use lump of wooden broom handle plus 5lb lump hammer to shift!!  No other problems though.
Noticed before removing cam belt banks 1/2 were 1 tooth retarded - adjusted correctly.  Took 2 goes to get timing spot on after changing belt and setting tensioner (thats two 360º turns of crank - each time banks 3/4 ok, but 1/2 needed adjusting).  Also had to grease up aux belt tensioner pulley as DVD as it was dry and a bit noisy.

Benefits - apart from knowing cam belt + tensioners etc ok for another 40k miles - car started first time on the button.  Engine quieter and smoother, good power right up rev band.  This car has never started first time on the button ever since i have owned it, always starts ok second attempt - it starts first time now!

I am not a novice having dones loads of cam belts (+ timing chains in my time), but have to say V6s are easy if you have the right kit, a good cam locking kit, and follow the DVD.

Next week i'll be doing my second - the estate - should manage this a bit quicker.
