Omega General Help / Cleaning rear brake pipes
« on: 26 September 2009, 19:15:20 »
Hi guys, I got an advisory on my MOT a while ago for my rear brake pipes, he said they need cleaning up and greasing or painting.  I am planning on having a look at this tomorrow, my plan was to rub them down with a wire brush and then coat them in copper grease.  Is that the best way to do things?  Also I am a bit worried about breaking them, how much do I need to clean them up before greasing?

Omega General Help / Wet floor, scuttle drain etc
« on: 19 May 2008, 20:31:07 »
I have got loads of water under the carpet, its all soaked into the soundproofing.  I have read threads about this and checked the scuttle drain.  There was no water in there but the drain was blocked.  Also where the cables go through to the car higher up to the right of the scuttle, the grommit has got a cable going through the hole by the side of the grommit pulling it away from the side.  I cant get this to seal properly so have stuck loads of gaffa tape round it to stop any water getting down there.

Now I have soaking wet soundproofing that I can't seem to get dry as it is so absorbant!  I am leaving the windows and sunroof slightly open all day with the soundproofing and carpets held up with screwdrivers etc but its still not drying out like I hoped.  Is there an easier way of getting the soundproofing dry?  It's the front and the back passenger sides.

Also I don't understand how the scuttle drain being blocked can cause wet carpets, where does the water come in from, pollen filter?  Could the water be coming from anywhere else?  I have already checked the sunroof drains and they drain to the sills on both sides so think they are ok.

Omega General Help / Alternator - Cheers Mark + Daz
« on: 21 September 2009, 18:44:46 »
After a nice last day of my holiday being towed 8 hours back from the West coast of Wales after my alternator was sparking and smoking.

Got in contact with Mr DTM and picked up an alternator last night.  This is my second alternator change and I think I am starting to get the knack of it now.  I managed to get the new alternator on and all the belts etc back on in 40 mins after I gave myself an hour to do it so I am quite chuffed!

Big thanks to Mark for getting me out of a mess again, and also a big thanks to looknee for helping me out on the phone, all your advice was fantastic  :y

Omega General Help / Car sometimes revving on its own
« on: 26 April 2009, 10:27:35 »
Hi guys, over the last week my car has twice been revving on its own.  First time it did it the car took quite a while to start and then the revs were much higher than normal about 2 - 2.5k, when I started driving the revs were staying up and pushing the car along even under breaking.  The car did similar last night, I put it into neutral and the revs gradually came down.  Obviously i'm now worried about this as I don't want to have an accident cause the car is pushing me under breaking.  Any ideas on what could be causing this?

On a positive note it seems that my coolant leak has stopped or slowed considerably so have got some time to get prepared to sort the thermostat out  :y

Omega General Help / Coolant Leak
« on: 23 March 2009, 18:25:37 »
My water leak seems to be getting slowly worse, I am now having to top it up once a week at least :(

It is leaking somewhere at the back of the engine although it isnt the HBV, it is somewhere on the passenger side.  I am a bit worried about trying to find and repair this leak as it looks like it might be coming from the middle of the V, possibly thermostat etc?

Any help pn this would be very much appreciated as I am going on holiday soon and the car needs to make it to cornwall and back and dont want to end up stranded down there if it completely goes on me :(

Richard

Omega General Help / Changing rear brake pads
« on: 13 February 2009, 09:03:19 »
Hi guys I am going to change my rear pads today.  I have got new pads, pins and retaining clip things from Vauxhall.  Hopefully they are the right ones as there were two listed for vented and non vented.  I got the non vented ones.

Anyway are the rear pads as easy to do as the fronts or is there anything extra I will have to do?

Omega General Help / Car handling problem.
« on: 29 December 2008, 19:53:49 »
I have noticed some strange handling problems recently.  The car seems to be following all the bumps in the road etc.  Driving home today I also noticed that when I go over the white lines the car seems to amplify the steering and dive over the line slightly.

The car also has had a problem since I got it, when I brake and turn at low speed, for example turning the car in the entrance to a side road, I get a grinding type of noise from the front wheel on the inside.  I always thought it was perhaps the tyres rubbing or mudflap etc but now I am starting to think they might be related.  Also the back drivers side wheel looks like it has some camber on it compared to the other side, all this kind of stuff confuses me!

I need to get some new tyres soon and was thinking of getting geometry done but dont want to spend money on it just to find out they cant do it due to something being worn out or knackered on it.

Any advice on what I can check?  MOT is due in March so I could perhaps get the garage to give a more thorough check over all the necessary parts for geometry so that I can make sure it would be ready to be set up?

Omega General Help / How to connect HID's to early model
« on: 20 January 2009, 16:08:04 »
I have taken the original headlight out but need to know where to connect the wires for the ballast pack to?  There is a brown and a yellow wire.

Was quite fiddly to get them out, had to take the washer jet off the bottom which I think might be slightly broken, any tips on getting them back in?

Omega General Help / Cant remove oil filler pipe
« on: 11 January 2009, 13:49:40 »
I have bought 2 new seals for oil cap and oil filler pipe but I cant get the pipe off.  The socket I have got wont fit onto the bolt head as the hole around it isnt big enough.  How am I supposed to get it off?  Do I need to try and buy a thinner E10 socket?

Omega General Help / HID Headlights
« on: 23 November 2008, 01:55:03 »
Hi guys I need to upgrade my lights and have decided to go to HID's.  I have been offered a pair of projector HID's but they have no connectors with them etc.  Will I just be able to swap straight over?  Is the wiring loom the same between my standard reflectors and HID projectors?

Omega General Help / Hit a pheasant
« on: 25 October 2008, 21:33:02 »
I was driving home earlier and hit a pheasant at about 70mph, when I got home I checked for damage and my front passenger side foglight is smashed!  So now I am fed up ad I now need a new foglight, my coolant keeps going down and I think my rocker gaskets might be leaking again :(

Any ideas how much I am looking at for a replacement foglight?  And is it easy to change?

Richard

Omega General Help / Exhaust snapped
« on: 29 September 2008, 21:42:53 »
Driving to work this morning I thought my car sounded a bit louder than normal, I turned the stereo down and thought the exhaust was leaking.  I checked it later and the exhaust has snapped where the right pipe joins the backbox, it is really rusty and doesnt look repairable.  Its been fairly loud since I bought it over a year ago.  Looking at the left pipe that looks almost as bad so think I will need a whole cat back system :(  I was going to go down Vauxhall tomorrow to buy it all, I have got the part numbers from the yellow book but I was wondering if I will need to buy any u bolts or rubbers etc or just reuse the old ones?  Also do I need exhaust paste?

I have never done any exhaust work before I have always taken it in to a garage.  Are there any tips for changing it over or should I buy the system from Vauxhall then get a garage to fit it?

Sorry for all the questions, cheers,

Richard

Omega General Help / Battery / Alternator again
« on: 16 August 2008, 19:05:48 »
Well I am having more problems again with the battery and alternator.  Had 2 flat batteries today, car had only been stood 5 hours the second time...

Right so when the engine is running car struggles to make 13.5 and seems worse when its hot 13v maximum.

When engine is hot and I turn everything on then it struggles to make 12.5v sometimes 12v

Tried another battery and I am getting same results.  So I am pretty sure that the alternator is knackered :(  I have ran new earth cable for the batter but not new power cable as I havent had the time, should I check voltage at the alternator before changing it?  I am quite sure you cant get that much voltage drop over a cable, it seems to not get hot, does get warm though after a run.

Also i'm sure I read on here that someone does reconditioned alternators on exchange in Nottingham?

Richard

Omega General Help / Fault code 16
« on: 06 July 2008, 11:57:15 »
Hi guys, engine managent light has been going on and off recently but yesterday it came on and would go off for ages.  When it comes on the car has low power but will rev past 4.5k.  The only way to get the light off is to really rev the car in sports mode and all of a sudden it clears...

Checked codes and came up with 12 and 16, 16 is knock sensor one.  Any ideas on what I can do to test this etc as it is working normally today.  I read somewhere about a cable runnin gpast the drivebelt tensioner but I thought that went to the EGR?  I have recently changed the tensioner but I cant see any wires trapped near it.

Cheers,

Richard
