I'm just not sure what to do. Think I might have to take a punt on it anyway and see how it goes. I'h hate to spend that money though and then get told it was going to cost another whack to get it released. I think Ebay seems to be the way to go as it totals everything up.  :-\

Has anyone had experience of ordering stuff online and getting it delivered from the U.S? I'm looking at this item http://www.amazon.com/MAG77LT-15-Amp-Magnesium-Circular-Lightest/dp/B00B7EUS46/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382646148&sr=8-1&keywords=skilsaw+mag77lt and when I go through the order it adds a fee of £33.00 odd which it says import fee deposit. Is this the most I will have to pay or is there a chance that it will go up? I've heard some horror stories of people ordering things from abroad and then the package being held in customs here until another fee is paid to release it which varies greatly depending on which story you listen to.

I've had one of these saws for the past 10yr or more and unfortunately its starting to get a little too long new so I'd rea;;y like to get another if possible and they don't make them in the U.K at all  :'(

« on: 07 October 2013, 19:33:12 »
I have several tools which have been imported from the states. They all work fine using a ''yellow box'' or site transformer  which plugs into a normal 240v socket and normally has 2 110v  outputs. Not sure how much these cost but I imagine you can pick up one fairly cheap second hand.

Depending on the make of the impact gun you may be able to pick up a cheap 240v charger from the UK which will also charge your battery. I have several 18v nail guns from the U.S. which came with 110V chargers but also the batteries all charge perfectly well on a UK bought 240v charger

Depends what you need it for Opti. Stihl is by far the best but they are seldom round the £100 mark. You may be lucky and get a second hand one. I use them daily for roofing, timber frames etc but if its only for occassional use then some of the cheaper models can be picked up new for £100 or less

Hmmmm possibly. I had a bit of a wait on the new earth strap coming from town so I fitted the new battery and was talking to a mate who said that the earth strap was pretty pointless anyway so I decided to see if it would start without it and it did!?!?!? Started every time without fail so I'm not totally sold but either way I've got a new battery and earth strap and its working fine since  :y. (Didn't like to leave the earth strap off as it was only £3 and it obviously serves some purpose)

I don't know exactly what's going on re the finance and car, as far as I know its all down to the solicitor now. From what I gather the garage gave her 6 months warranty and then when she had problems with it after a few months they basically pretended to fix it but it kept having same problem and then they had the car that long the last time that they told her the 6 month warranty had expired and they wouldn't be standing over it any more and doing no more work to it. Bit crap imo but as I say i dont know the full details.

Anyways she has got a motor sorted now so thanks for the offers guys.

Thanks for coming back to me Kevin. Got fed up with it at the weekend and went for a new battery. Whilst swapping them over noticed that the earth connection (engine block to sub frame) had frayed almost completely through so replaced that as well. All connections around the battery look and feel to be in perfect condition although I didn't get time to check connections round the starter. Hasn't missed a beat since the new battery went in so hopefully that's cured it. Fingers crossed, I'll be back if it starts again.

When car is cold everything works as normal. I've just done a bit of a test this evening. Car hasn't been started since yesterday evening, went out and started fine, drive for about 2 minutes, switched it off and then it started again perfectly. Did this 5 times in a row then went for a half hr drive switched off and no start. The dash lights all come on as normal but when I turn the key on round to start it tries to turn over once and then all the dash lights go out and the radio is now in safe mode. If I use the jump leads or a booster pack the car will start instantly. It seems to be pointing towards a knackered battery but I'm confused as to how it always starts when cold but not once it has been driven for a while.

Oh and its a manual.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Hot start problem
« on: 25 September 2013, 19:45:24 »
Bit strange but here goes. Car starts first go every morning and once it has been sitting for a while but once it has been running for a while it doesn't start. Once it has been driven for a while, I can turn it off and then try to start again but it doesn't even try to turn over. Its like the battery is dead but once the I turn the key back I can turn all the electrics, on and leave them going for ages so I presume its not a dead battery I have. The car starts immediately from a jump or even the slightest push when hot. Is it possible I have a bad connection somewhere, the battery terminals all look good and don't seem to be heating up? Could it be a starter fault? I'd like to get this sorted at the weekend so any help on what to look for and where would be much appreciated. Someone also mentioned a bad earth connection could cause this??

I know I need to get some voltage readings so will pick up a multimeter tomorrow or friday. Is there any particular type or model of multimeter I should try to get or are they all the same?

Looking for a cheap runaround for my sister. She bought a 307 on finance from a garage few months back and it has spent more time back in said garage than on the road. Cut a long story short she is taking said garage to court over the motor but she currently has no wheels and the funds are low so she has asked me to see if I can find something for her. I'm currently bidding on a few on ebay but I though I'd put the feelers out on here as well. She's just looking something cheap and reliable for a few months. Obviously tax and mot would be a great help. I think she's after something like an astra or focus. Thanks Guys

Omega General Help / Cambelt, tensioner and water pump. Anything else?
« on: 10 September 2013, 23:23:54 »
My car is going to be off the road for around a month or so now while I'm away working so I plan to leave it to my mechanic and have some work done. Have already got the cambelt, tensioner, water pump and fan belt. Are there any other jobs I should look into getting done while he's in there. The cam cover gaskets have been done around 2-3 months ago as have the coilpacks and new plugs in. Have been getting some fairly low readings on the temp. gauge so was thinking of getting the thermostat done as well and my starter is starting to  mess about so will prob get that checked out also. Obviously I'll get the filters and fluids changed as well but is there anything I'm forgetting about or overlooking

Not definite just yet but looks like I'll be travelling from Ireland across to England around the end of the month and then coming back around a month after that so if anyone needs stuff shifting across the pond then give me a shout. Will be taking a van though not sure  what size yet so should be able to manage most items. The company is paying for the boat, any small contribution towards fuel would be much appreciated but am happy to do it for nothing as I'm making the trip anyway. Most likely route is Omagh-Dublin-Holyhead-Swindon. Will probably be around London at some stage as well. Can make various detours if needs be but a bit of notice would help.

Thanks guys, looks like I'm heading over on the 31st to get the travelling out of the way and find the lay of the land etc. Will prob be over for around 4-5 weeks so can definitely meet up at some stage, once the working day is over there's not much else to do but go or a few jars when your away from home.
