Title: Quick Battery question

Hello,

Just putting the finishing touches to my Omega 2.0i CD free project. I have fitted the rear diff (took 3 solid days!) and have the new exhaust manifold to fit.

I think I need a new battery, as the one that is on there has seen better days. Just a quick question about what battery is required.

The item on there atm is a 700CCA, 75AH affair, it is rather massive!!. I have tried a fully charged 600CCA 60AH item on there, but that does not have enough power to turn the engine, as well as power everything else.

What is the manufacturers official line on this?

Hi James

TC book lists part number 93176576 as a 55 amp/hr for the 2 litre at £25.76 plus VAT.....
Sounds like you need the OE 70 amp/hr, 9201470 at £60.34 plus VAT or the chunkier one for the 3.2 - 93176584 85 amp/hr at £45.54..........

Thanks for that :). I wonder if the battery that is on there is overspecced, or if the Omega needs a beefier battery?

Not so sure of the chunky 3.2 alternate, but the OE spec one is a good commencement point, perhaps??

Sorry, didn't read your first post properly (comes from watching Saxondale at the same time as replying). Your OE spec figures do confirm my thoughts that I need the OE spec battery.

Are you sure the batteries you have are OK.

Vx fitted a 55Ah on my mate's 2.5 Elite (I suspect because it was all they had in stock) and that worked fine.

I think you'd be fine with one the the Vx Go batteries for about £25 - I've two (one on a Honda) and they seem pretty good.

If a 60Ahr battery wont start the car, are you sure the starter motor is ok?

Seems to be, but the battery I was trying to use could be weak as it has trouble starting my Jag, which is where it usually lives. I think I need to just charge it for a bit longer.

I've got the standard Vaux GO in my Megga, a 2.5 CDX.  This is the 66Ah version.  I have the Vaux Go battery in the cavalier, this is the 55Ah version.  These batteries are nice and cheap to buy, look good in the engine bay (well it does in the Cav as the Omega has a cover) and seem to last well.  They do not, though seem to hold their charge for extended periods when the car is not used (according to the magic eye anyway).  This is probably true of most batteries though.

The Vaux battery in both cars copes well, and turns the engine over just fine on the starter.

Thanks to all for the advice. I have ordered up a battery from www.batmanuk.com , the cost, £64.50+VAT , with free UK weekday delivery, so it comes monday.

Specs, he had a quick look, the heavy duty item appear to be specified on his records, so a 72AH 700CCA 096 affair has been ordered. External dimesions, 278mm by 175mm by 175mm .

It can't hurt to have a bigger one. The problem with fitting a smaller specced battery is, that although may start the car fine, it will probably fail prematurely. And the listed batteries for omega in the vauxhall service handbook are NOT correctly listed for the diesel. Though the genuine batteries do seem to last well.

With quite alot of electrical gizmo's i'd be tempted not to skimp on spec or quality.

Just had to replace mine on 2.5TD with a 800A type (correct I beleive) £68 inc VAT from Halfords with the AA trade discount when it refused to start in Sainsbury's car park
(Got it washed by an obliging Pole while I waited for AA man to arrive - those guys do a brilliant job for £6!)
The previous battery was a 680A & had survived for over 4 yrs

I think plumping for the fatter battery is an advantageous choice in my book, as I tend to drive the car once a week (cycle in to work the rest of the time).

However, as an aside, this lack of driving does mean a V6 could be on the cards again at some point :).

Same battery on TC ...72AH BBMS 096....£39.19 +vat
