Yes, they do have gyros in them and they work in conjunction with the speed pulse of the car to know how far you are travelling in a given direction - this information is then interposed upon a map and the navigation can then operate fully - every 30 seconds or so it will then confirm its location by means of a GPS signal.
Operating this way makes them exceptionally more accurate than the handheld units that only know their location from a received GPS signal.

That would fall in line with the fault diag then - no speed signal ? - But then is s/o GPS that inaccurate ?, maybe with a poor sig as well, Umm.....
What was the cost of the unit new ? - guess I HAVE to buy a facelift now...
