Spanner light gone.
« on: 06 October 2012, 20:57:37 »

Since the spring the spanner light has been coming on fairly often in the 2.2 estate, switching it off & restarting has always cleared it. Last weekend had a new timing belt kit fitted & new water pump , since then no spanner light problems , my mechanic said that  the one he removed appeared rather slack, could this have been the cause I wonder.

The cam sensor which sits behind the two cams, can cause spanner light to be on if faulty. The timing must have been way out though!

its worth checking its been done right, its easy to check the timing. Lug on bottom of crank pulley should match lug in engine block

Just thinking if the timing was out wouldnt that bring up the EML light instead of the Spanner light?? I always thought the spanner light represented servicing  :-\

Nothing to do with servicing, the spanner is emissions related.  ;)

Nope. "Engine" light is emissions. "Spanner" light flags a fault

Perhaps not, but it could perhaps do with a rust gauge and a coolant pressure sensor in each head ::)

Bulb still comes on with ignition so bulb ok!! The car used to go into limp mode when spanner lit up , as i said since timing belt done no more problems. The handbook suggests a fault in the alarm system, and advises to switch off & restart to reset the system .

Wonder if cam sensor wasn't seated right, and this was sorted when doing cambelt. IIRC, same bolt that holds camcover in place on 2.2 holds cam senosr in place

I made that mistake, sheared off the bolt  ::)  :'(

There is actually a tiny little bolt which holds the sensor, its right up in between the two cams  :)

When my cam sensor was failing simply disconnecting and reconnecting it would "fix" it for a week or two.  That eventually became a day or two until I replaced it.  I guess that just disconnecting it has settled it for a while, but it will be back.
