They don't resolve for me.

Or maybe they do?

Yes, absolutely. It's not on to tear a strip off people in public. If there's something to be said, it should be one to one.

I'd normally suggest an oxy-acetelene torch... but since it's an engine part, I'd assume it is a Bad Idea...?

Applied a little heat with a blowtorch, but it's got a vibration damper built into the pulley so didn't want to melt it.

Cant you get somebody to put thier foot on the brake.....

Yep. Planning to do this tonight after getting the wheels on the floor.

I also hope its not like the Omega V6 where it buggers the sprocket if you try the method you are by sheering the woodruff key.

Umm. Me too. The early MX5s had very troublesome crank nose / pulley arrangements anyway. This one's a 2000 model and apparently better but i'm still nervous. Depends where all the loads are going when you're grunting on the breaker bar I guess. Through the Woodruff key being less then ideal.

If I could get the outer pulley / vibration damper off I could probably fabricate a tool to lock the crank using its mounting bolts but I can't.  :-/ Then I read reports on various forums that it doesn't come off unless the main crank pulley bolt is removed anyway, which sounds odd but might explain yesterday's lack of progress. Oh, for a decent workshop manual ::)

General consensus if you believe what's on most Mazda forums is to strap a breaker bar onto it and turn the starter key... :o

Haven't come across anyone who's broken anything getting it off, even using the above method, which is encouraging.

You do realise those bolts are often 200+Nm + angle tighten and require replacing once removed.

This one is 120 lb ft tightening torque, so not too bad in theory but it's just siezed, I think. Oh, well, another dousing in plus gas and some more grunting later...

Doesn't help that the anti-roll bar runs across the front of the engine at pully height. Maybe that'll have to come off  >:(

Bigger Hammer. If it doesn't loosen the pulley, close bonnet and hit that repeatedly. You'll feel much better, and blame the dents on her driving Grin

It's sounding increasingly like a job for sammy. Handbrake has already been found lacking while trying to undo the crank pulley bolt in 5th gear (no apparent means of locking flywheel).

One of these might help once the bolt's off: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cht248-13-pce-harmonic-balance-puller/path/automotive-tools

Just persisting down here. Has been all day. Not that I'd know, other than the water that was blowing under the garage door while I was changing swearing at Emma's cam belt.  >:(

Anyone got any tips regarding removing stubborn crank pullies? Tried by hand, hitting with hammer, tried a puller, puller with hammer, 1/2 a can of plus gas later no joy. Will have to remove entire pulley (it's a 2 part job like the V6) and separate on the bench. Would have done already if I had a socket the right size for the pulley bolt.  ::)

I would only touch that, at any price, if I was at the registered keeper's address, siiting in his living room having a cup of tea following a satisfactory test drive and with an HPI report in my hand.

I'm sorry, he may be perfectly genuine, but there's enough in that ad to make folk smell a rat that he's got to expect nothing less than the above, if genuine.

At least there's some compression so if there is damage it's only a slightly bent valve or two and the heads will probably have survived.

What are the highest and lowest readings?

Also, remember you are doing this test cold and the readings generally improve and become more consistent across cylinders when the engine is hot.

Additionally, the hydraulic lifters may not be fully pumped up, which will affect the readings - but it all depends what readings a good cylinder are returning against a bad cylinder. I'd normally expect them to be within 0.5 - 1 BAR (on a good engine that's just been run and if fully warmed up).

I'd run for a minute or two and have another go.

I don't think the number of parents / guardians is the issue. It's whether someone is there to take an interest in bringing them up properly and devoting a bit of time out of their busy lives to be with them. Too many kids get left to their own devices or parmed off onto anyone who'll look after them IMHO.
