Auto box oil change
« on: 31 December 2011, 20:19:58 »

Hi all , ive been reading the threads on how to change the auto gearbox fluid and see that the car needs to be running while this job is done ... while draining the old oil out im supprised it doesnt cause any dammage with no fluid in especially when the car is still running while you lower the car to drain the excess  ??? Or have i missed something about turning the car off during the process .
Just checking as ill be doing this pretty soon  :y

Thanks  :y

Engine is off whilst sumps are dropped and old oil is drained and filters changed etc.

Engine is still off when sumps replaced.

Engine is still off when oil is introduced into filling hole until oil drips out filling hole.

Engine is now started and gearbox pumps oil around the system, subsequently lowering the oil level in the casing.

Oil level is now topped up whilst engine still running (and car on a level keel - most important) until oil weeps out filling hole, then plug is inserted into the filling hole.

If filling plug is removed whilst engine is off, expect oil to pour out and up your arm.

I dont think im going to be able to do this without the aid of a proper 4/2 post lift seeing as the car has to be level , crawling under the car is a no no with engine running me thinks .

Not wanting to be a pedant against another pedant but, your wrist goes upto your oxter/armpit, irrespective if your hand is higher or lower than said oxter/armpit.....   :P   ;D

.. ...last recall was mig front skirt hits the bottom of ramps  :D

That's where you need an extension of some sort. 2 short planks would be good enough  ;) ;) ;) ;) but I was able to make these at work.  :y

Personally, I would use the ramps on the front by means of a piece of wood or similar to reduce the approach angle of the front skirt of the bumper to avoid impact and have the rear wheels on axle stands.

That removes ANY possibility of inadvertant starting of the engine and running it through the gears and then forgetting the car is 18" up in the air and the rear wheels in contact with the ramps.....   ::)   :o

My reasoning for reversing up the ramps was that the back wheels were locked/braked while I lift the front. If done the other way, the front wheels are free to turn while you lift the back .........  ??? ??? ??? No right or wrong I suppose.
