it makes me laugh when i see small cars with parking sensors,i have never had sensors on any car or van ive driven and managed not to reverse into anything, thats what mirrors are for ;D ;D ;D

That's been my line too over the years. I have to say though, that this R Class would be 'challenging' to park without its sensors ........... you have no idea at all where the front or back is  :y

Certain models of small cars have a wide 'D' Pillar so reversing is not as clear as you would think. For example, the MINI hatch is not standard with park sensors but the convertible is. This is due to poor rearward visibility with the roof up.
As Andy said, the SMART Roadster is another one, along with the Ford KA Roadster, which both have poor rearward visibility.

Such is the poor rearward visibility of the MINI convertible and the Ford KA Roadster, you are not allowed to take your driving test in one as the examiner doesn't have an all around view.  :y

ford puma also has poor visability but never had no problem parking it,my own opinion here is that people just cant judge distances when using door mirrors, and prefer to rely on sensors, yet i still see cars with these parking aids with dents and scrapes on the bumpers,so really they cant be that good  :D :D

I agree that you 'should' know the distance of your own car.  :y In a strange car, you could always pull up near a soft hedge, move forward until a branch moves and then remember that distance and add a foot on.  ;D ;D
I drive a M Sport Coupe so by the time the front parking sensor goes off you have already ripped the front bumper off on the high kerb..........allegedly.  ::) ::) :-X

Many years ago we stayed at a caravan park in Hemsby, just outside Great Yarmouth, and year after year a Robin Reliant pulled on to the site towing a trailer tent.  ;D ;D

There's at least one Cobra replica out there with one, too.. possibly two.

I saw a 998cc K11 Micra with one last week, as well!
