Hi and buyers guide needed please
« on: 03 March 2009, 19:40:06 »

Hello,

I am hoping to buy an Omega tomorrow. I have had a look at it and am going for a second look but came on here looking for some advise/information.

Is there anything I should look out for other than the usual car buying things? It has what seems to be the usual bit of rust on the rear arches but if I get it I can catch it before it gets too bad. It is a 99 2.5 V6 Elite auto estate with all the toys and I have been told to push every button to check it all works. It has 160,000 miles with LPG and he is looking for offers and I really don't know what to pay. It has some service history but is by no means full. I have had a look on ebay and they seem to go for a range of prices so any advise would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew.

Hello and welcome  :y

Big question to ask is when the cambelt and tensioners were last replaced ..... should be done at least every 40K -- or things might go pop in a big way!!!

Have a breeze around the forum to pick up any tips.

See if the LPG is single or multi point --- singles have a habit of backfiring and blowing the air box apart :o

Hi Andrew and welcome to the forum.
I would ask for evidence of a cambelt and tensioner change, they need doing every 40,000 miles or 4 years which ever comes first, I would also pull a plug lead from each bank and look for oil which would indicate the cam cover gaskets are leaking, not a bad job but a good bargaining point. Also run the engine and check the water bottle for oil. Good luck :y

Hi and welcome to the forum :y Was the LPG a DIY or professional job. Any service history for the LPG. Has it got the certificate? Check all panel warning and check lights illuminate. Any signs of oil near and around camcover areas :y And as "Holy Count" says, cambelt and tensioners a MUST!!!!!!!!!

Blimey I didn't expect replies that quickly, thanks guys.

The guys selling it has had it for 3 years and done all servicing himself including cam belts/tensioners in the last 3,000 miles. As a result there is no proof that this has been done but he has receipts for parts. I will be servicing it and doing other stuff myself too so I am happy with that.

The LPG is a DIY multipoint. I had a single point on a land rover and that was a big no no so checked it was multi. I am not fussed about a certificate as our Range Rover doesn't have a cert either.

Thanks for the advice so far I'll make sure I check the cam cover areas and dash lights.

Welcome to the forum mate. I paid £510 for my 98 3.0l elite estate & £550 for my 99 2.5l cdx saloon, both last year. As yours will have lpg i would have thought a higher price tbh. Im sure another member will get back to you on this.  :y
