Start by gently cleaning the inside of the rear window - that normally helps mine when it goes a bit like sizzling bacon.

Hmmm, bacon....

Either scratch on screen element, dodgy 0v connection for rear element/aerial or loose/corroded connections @ amplifier under parcel shelf

Worth checking the old favourite of the aerial lead connector at the back of the radio - even if the connection is poor, it may still allow some signal giving the indication that it is ok, but the degraded signal from having the heater on may just be enough for it to show a fault

Had a a similar problem on the Carlton many years ago, turned out to be the aerial connection at the back of the radio.  But only after I had replaced the aerial amplifier and found it made no difference.  So if you need a 90378750 aerial amplifier, you're welcome to my spare  :y

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind. It'll not be this side of new year though when I look, and it's far too wet at the moment.  ;)

I got fed up with the HRW aerial and fitted a roof aerial. A bit fiddly but superb reception now. My car is an estate but swmbo's car is a saloon and the reception is fine!

I fitted a Hirschman (correct spelling?) whip aerial on the roof between the sunroof and the windscreen. It's the type of aerial that Peugeot and Renault use so you may be able to get on from a scrappy (about a two foot whip on a hinged mount). Carefully release the plastic trim which houses the sunroof switch/interior light which allows you to see the interior of the roof. Drill the hole, carefully, and taking care that the hole is in the middle of the roof (left to right wise, obvious really but...!) and the hole is about midway between the windscreen and sunroof. Make sure that there's nothing in the way underneath where you intend to drill the hole! Remove the near side door pillar trim and using a peice of stiff wire, fish the aerial cable across the roof lining. Remove the glove box and poke the aerial cable down the side of the dashboard moulding. Fish the cable out from behind the glove box and once the radio and cage is removed poke the cable round behind the heater controls and out of the radio apeture. Simples! Took me about an hour to do thats all and I get superb radio reception.

Humpy

PS The wifes car is a saloon and has excellent reception with the standard setup!
