General Discussion Area / More 'thought of the day'...
« on: 28 August 2007, 21:22:35 »
(Found on the net, no copyright claimed)

The teacher tells her students that they should expect an exam some time during the next week. But she does not say when. The exam is to be unexpected.

But will it be unexpected?

Can the teacher give the exam on Friday? No, for if she gives it on Friday, then on Friday morning her students, knowing that they hadn't had the exam earlier in the week, will expect it.

What about Thursday? Well, as her students know that the exam cannot be on Friday, if she leaves it till Thursday, the exam will again be expected. So Thursday is out, too.

What about Wednesday? That, again, is ruled out. Her students know the exam cannot be on either Thursday or Friday, so if the teacher leaves it until Wednesday, the exam will again be expected.

But then Tuesday and Monday are also out, and for the same reason.

In short, the teacher cannot give an unexpected examination.

Yet, of course, she can. Can't she?

General Discussion Area / Senny for sale
« on: 27 August 2007, 12:13:19 »
There's a 1993 Senator for sale in Car Mechanics Magazine classified ads, '24v manual, black, black leather, rebuilt engine, E/W, E/S, E/M electric adjustable suspension, ABS, SatNav, phone, 10 disc CD.... £1,500 ono'.

Now 1993 is probably as late as you can get a senny, and it does have some interesting extras, but £1,500???  :o

General Discussion Area / Volvo help, please....
« on: 09 August 2007, 23:33:36 »
I am currently in Italy driving a borrowed Volvo 850, not sure about the age but it looks like early nineties so probably around 15 years old, the car is great but has no dashboard illumination and the courtesy lights aren't working either. So it must be a fuse - anyone has/had one of these beasts by any chance and knows where the fuse box is...?

General Discussion Area / Dual-fuel question
« on: 06 August 2007, 10:32:59 »
I am looking at importing a car from Europe for the wife. She is after a very small dual-fuel vehicle so that it is good around town and exempt from Congestion Charging.

Problem is that very small cars have small boots, so I was thinking that if I get a Natural Gas vehicle as opposed to LPG, it should be fairly easy to simply remove the gas bottle and store it when the full size of the is needed. Obviously removing an LPG tank is not practical.

Does anyone know if I am correct in my assumption? Can I simply remove the gas bottle and drive the vehicle normally albeit on petrol?

Incidentally, it seems that in the UK LPG is more common than Natural Gas, but in Europe it is the other way around for some reason.

This was forwarded to me by email, it is genuine and not not a hoax. Anyone who may wish to assist please read.

Request for assistance - Soldiers, Sailors & Air Force Association (SSAFA)

SSAFA are attempting to purchase a 6 bedroom house in the town of Ashtead, Surrey, so that relatives can stay locally whilst visiting their injured loved ones (UK Service personnel from Iraq & Afghanistan).  These Servicemen (& women) are in the nearby rehabilitation centre, RAF Headley Court, for months or even years at a time. It is essential that the families can get a local facility NOW, so that they can visit Headley Court & help in the long-term rehabilitation of their loved ones.

There are some issues over the planning application, which is being contested by some local residents & therefore the planning application has been recommended for refusal. You can help change this decision, due to be discussed at the forthcoming Council Planning Meeting on 01 August by going to the website listed, & following the links at the top of the webpage.

General Discussion Area / Dartford rant
« on: 15 July 2007, 10:00:13 »
OK, it has been said before (er... by me), and I'll say it again, if we say it often enough it might just start echoing around and eventually someone at the government will pick this up:

The hour-long queue of cars, vans, and lorries at the toll booths at the Dartford Crossing during rush hour generates congestion, pollution, CO2 emissions, and fuel waste. In the interest of saving the planet please raise the barriers and let traffic flow, we know you need the money but you can't sell our clean air for pennies. (And yes, I heard the official version that the booths are there to avoid congestion and queuing inside the tunnel, but Blackwall Tunnel has no toll boots, only a red light that stops traffic from entering when the tunnel is congested, and it is green at all other times.)

There, I said it....

...if anyone got this error, then from googling it seems that this is because you are working on a laptop without parallel port (most new laptop have neither parrallel nor serial ports, just USB).

If you don't know what I'm talking about, then it is not important...

If you do know, then let me know if there is a workaround.... by PM ;)

First, a bit of history… I bought the current Omega in 2001 when it was 5 months old and had 6.4k on the clock. When the 3-year warranty was just about to expire, and with under 30k on the clock, Vx replaced under warranty both camcover gaskets and the oil cooler (there was another unrelated leak from the PAS pump, apparently due to lose hoses).

I don’t know for fact if they actually cleaned the breathers, but it was not mentioned on the (detailed) job sheet so I suspect not.

The oil cooler and camcovers were OK since, but a couple of months ago I noticed that the driver’s side camcover was leaking. I change the oil very frequently, but I have never cleaned the breathers – so they were probably never cleaned during the car’s 5 years / 50k lifetime.

I bought all the bits and got the job done during the last weekend. After removing the leaking camcover, it seemed that Vx did a good job, using original Vx gasket ad applying black sealant in the right places. Also, the breathers were totally blocked with brown-yellow sticky goo.

As result, I decided not to replace the passenger-side camcover gasket which was not leaking, even though I purchased the gasket for it. Since I found a good reason why the gasket was leaking in the first place, and the workmanship seemed good, I thought I could leave the good gasket in place. Hopefully, I won’t regret it…

I put it all back together and the engine seems to run OK, good idle, not hesitation or flat spots, and so far no apparent leaks. So so far so good...
