Ideally, what I need is one of those plastic crates used a lot in warehousing etc. But as I can't find one of a suitable size, looks like I need to make something.
Will probably use a wooden frame with hardboard sides, to try to keep the weight down, unless anybody has better ideas?
Now, because what it carries is liable to be very dirty and very wet, and it will get chucked on the back seat of the car or in the boot, I wanted to seal it, so was looking for a paint that wouldn't rub off too easily, and would hold make it completely waterproof and now able to leak.
Unless somebody knows where I can get a fairly sturdy plastic crate with internal dimensions of 620mm x 480mm and 220-250mm high ? The dimensions can be slightly bigger, obviously, but would like to keep the size sensible.

Ask at Waitrose next time you're there... They might have a robust stacking crate going spare :-\

If you make a wooden crate, line it with pond liner to make it waterproof. I did it with the Tortoise,s indoor home and its perfect.
Obviously waterproof but also very tough. Not cheap though.

I was hoping to avoid lining, as I don't want to make it too heavy.

As the size you want is slightly bigger than the readily available crates, I think you will have to build one.
Have you considered welding a frame out of small, thin angle and panelling in plastic? Sikflex the joints and you're done; no painting required. Lighter than wood, and not as critical for the joints. Which is a real plus if your woodwork is as bad as mine :y
The size angle to use will depend on the weight, but 1.5mm thick makes good car battery trays.

polypropylene goes very brittle and splits
so don't put many body parts in them ,blood is hard to remove from car seats :D

I don't think the "Really Useful" ones are quite robust enough - she buys smaller ones for her craft shite, and after a short amount of time, they flex and split. Hence I was looking at the Euro containers such as https://plasticboxwarehouse.co.uk/product/87l-euro-stacking-container-800l-x-600w-x-235h-mm/ but thats just a little too large, making in inconvenient and a bit bulky.
I do have one that is so close, marked as 700x500 (and way too tall, but I could cut that down), but that 500 isn't quite enough, as the internal size is about 475 :(
Hence the idea of making one.

Another option considered was to buy 2 smaller euro type crates, and cut and join to make 2, but suspect I'll never get a good strong join between them.

A better question would be which plastic? Acrylic, polycarbonate, foamex, aluminium composite, there's loads. However, that's not much weight, so polycarbonate would be a reasonable choice; it's cheap, readily available, easily formed and glued(that's a problem with lots of plastics) and strong enough as it's used for shields, roof panels, glazing etc. You can buy it and acrylic sheet at B&Q, Wickes etc

So are the supermarket delivery 'bail arm' crates too small as they seem perfect for your requirements? I had my parents obtain them at a rate of about one a week off their local delivery guy (arithmetic is not his strong suit. :)).
One big home delivery order should mean you can retain one FOC :y

I think they usually use 600x400x300 ones. No need to ask how I know :P
