Fickin modern cars
« on: 29 November 2023, 21:05:19 »

Wife's grandland flashed a warning today saying 'additive consumption fault'. There also a warning light on the dash that looks like a mix of DPF symbol and some droplets. Obviously some king of fault with the pig piss. It's only done seven thousand miles. Grrrr.....

Why is Adblue a thing for derv cars. They seemed to run OK before this pig piss addition?

Assuming its not its way of saying it needs more pigs piss....

What is the quality of the pigs piss you have been using?  Has it been stored properly (out of sunlight, and at room temperature)?  This alone is why you shouldn't buy it from the petrol station where its left out in the sun, and then left to freeze.  You can get cheap gadgets to measure its quality.

Beyond that, the injectors seem to clog up and need cleaning up, as they get stuff with the white cystalised stuff around the injector into the SEC.

All this shite to appease the misinformed, stupid, waste of carbon do-gooders.

The car is over 2 years old and had only done 3000 miles when we bought it. So I guess the pig piss has been sitting in the tank for quite a while

Have you put pigs piss in it?

As a guide, you need 1l of pigs piss for every 250 - 600 miles (depending on usage etc, ours seems to be around 450miles), so 10l will last around 2.5k - 6k miles

I actually added a bottle of that just after we got the car. But I'm not going to mention that because in the warranty T&C's it mentions that they won't be responsible for any damage caused by adding stuff to the engine oil, fuel, etc.

It can, but most of us use our cars far too much for that to occur.  But look online to see how the DEF injector clogs with the shite.  Fortunately easy to clean in most cases, but means removing undertray to drop that bit out the exhaust.

Adblue fault can be a clogged piss injector as mentioned but can also be the Adblue tank pump or the inline heater, which when both replaced can be bloody expensive on some models. Expensive as in well over a grand if paying for fitment as well. The exhaust injector can be washed out but it's still an unnecessary faff.
Of course, the Adblue feature can be mapped out, tut tut.  ::)
The difference between a fault and a top up warning is that the countdown mileage says no re-start in around 600 miles and drops rapidly on each use of the vehicle, whereas a top up message usually starts at around 1500 miles left before no re-start and comes down normally.

If still under warranty leave it with the dealer but insist on a courtesy car for the entire duration. When I left my 2015 XFR with Watford Jaguar for a week they loaned me an almost new 300 BHP 3.0D XF complete with a full tank of derv. :)

Hers doesn't give a countdown, it just says it's low.  So kinda forces you to pull yer finger out as soon as it pops up.  Which reminds me, it popped up a few days ago, but far too cold to piss around with ;D

Unfortunately that's not the case with my ML, though when it is used, it get's driven fairly hard & is frequently towing.

(fingers crossed) not had any problems with it in 4 1/2 yrs & 40-ish thousand miles. It gets a gallon of Adblue as & when I remember ..... it's yet to actually ask for any. No gauge fitted to mine .... I believe there is on later MBs

Hers is still under warranty, so shouldn't need to take such drastic action just yet.

It didn't require an answer, Dave, surely?  ::)

The warning disappeared on the way home. A caretaker at one of her schools was talking to her today and she mentioned it. He said 'French, same as 3008. They do it when it gets cold, it'll go off again'  Who needs a mechanic?  ;D

well yes
that's how forums work , or you end up with a 15 page thread about a crank .no start ,that concludes "all working again now , turns out you need to put petrol in "
plus , you're no spring chicken , sadly  I know SOME old duffers suffer from dementia  :P :D

Boyle's Law in action iirc.

A drop in ambient temperature does that ;) Not uncommon onboard if the temperature drops overnight as all the oxygen bottles under read on the gauges.

She had one of those warnings on hers last night.  Only it was a genuine one, one of the rears down to 25 (I tend to run her rears at about 37 this time of year)

Fortunately, that nice Mr Bezos gave me a freebie handheld portable tyre inflator, so I didn't have to deal with it last night, just chucked more air in to get me to what used to be Tiffins and back.

Glad I'm not on the spanners anymore, D my relation I rent my unit from is a mobile mechanic and he said most breakdowns are caused by emission stuff, EGR, DPF and so on. Has an Astra diesel in at the moment that shows intake manifold flaps fault. Changed manifold and it still throws same code, fires up but wont rev/run.

Fortunately, that nice Mr Bezos gave me a freebie handheld portable tyre inflator, so I didn't have to deal with it last night, just chucked more air in to get me to what used to be Tiffins and back.
Has Tiffins been rebranded then?

Somewhat. Arguably the same continent, even if they want to join the EU ;D

Back to modern cars with modern, useless, pointless shit to appease the misinformed idiots....

I'd love to meet Sir Ian Callum in a dark alley.  He was the fikkin' moron who was chief designer of my car, so he was the one who signed off in putting that engine in it.  Braindead waste of carbon.

Er no, he signed off nothing more than the exterior shape of it, the design team have no interest or influence on what is under the skin and get mightily pissed off when you impact the outer skin (they currently hate shark fins and want a Merc S class 'ditch' approach which results in shlte connectivity).

Blame power train
