Centre console boot release
« on: 08 September 2010, 16:06:46 »

The boot release button on my facelift centre console doesn’t work.  It’s backlight comes on with the rest of the switches and the red LED comes on when the boot is open, but pressing the button does nothing.

The boot release works fine from the key fob, so I am assuming the wiring to the boot latch is OK.

I have popped the button out and checked that a good connection is made between two of the pins when the button is pressed (presumably the correct two pins  :) ).

So my question is where does the wiring go from the switch, so I can check continuity?

Is this a common problem with a well known fix, or is it on a fuse?

Thanks

(Oh, and yes, I have taken the key out of the ignition!)

Oops  :-[ – no, I didn’t press and hold, but I do now and the boot opens just fine.  So thanks zvi, problem solved.  :)

In fact the boot even opens even if the key is in the ignition, the engine is running and the car is in gear and moving forward.  I didn’t think this was supposed to happen but it’s no problem.

I just checked the Owner’s Manual and all it says is “Press the button on the instrument panel” – no mention of press and hold.

Still one good thing is that I sorted out the ashtray, which was naff, horrible and broken.  Now it’s back to being just naff and horrible!

Thanks again!

Hey there, could I ask how you fixed your ash tray?  Mine also seems to be broken as I need to pry it out with both my hands, pushing it to open doesn't work.

Hi Shimmy

Sounds as if mine had a different problem from yours, so I don’t know if this will be much use to you.

Mine was loose and floppy and didn’t close flush.  The fag lighter part wasn’t attached and didn’t work electrically, and the light didn’t come on when the ashtray was opened.  This is what I did:

Push on the little indentation in the centre of the cover and let the ashtray spring open.  (Sounds like even that part doesn’t work for you.)  Remove the ashtray insert as if you were emptying it by pulling the small catch to the right and lifting the insert out – see page 76 (the 78th page in the PDF) of the Owner’s Manual here http://images.omegaowners.com/documents/UserGuides/OmegaOct2002.pdf

Look behind the ashtray (use a torch) and undo the single Phillips number 1 screw that you will see right in the middle.  The two screws that are easier to see (one at each side) are nothing to do with the ashtray.  The entire assembly them slides out easily.  Pictures of this are here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152745540

I just cleaned things up a little, pushed the fag lighter socket back into its pivots and checked the wiring for continuity.  It turns out that the only problem with the electrics was that the connector on the back of the ashtray hadn’t been properly aligned with its other half on the car.  This meant there was no electrical connection, and that the assembly wasn’t seated correctly hence was flapping around loose.   A little care with lining things up and the single fixing screw could be tightened fully home, allowing everything to work OK.

The latch mechanism is a bit of flimsy plastic like you would find in a ballpoint pen.  I guess if this is broken, you would be best off picking up a complete ashtray from a scrappy.

Hope this helps.

Up to 2001, need key out, then a quick press to open.

Post 2001, needs a press and hold for 3s, irrespective of key in or out
