Car is a 197K 3.2 MV6 Auto
Now Yesterday whilst on the M6 in traffic jam / through 50 mph road works In realised 2 things.
Ambiant temperature was 23 deg C
1 ) Firstly it wouldn't pull away very quickly, almost like I had the brakes on if it wasn't an auto, I'd say the clutch was slipping.
2 ) Then It wouldn't allow cruise control to be selected.
3 ) Then I tried the sport button, and that didn't work.
So when stationary, I turned it off and restarted and it was fine.
But after a few miles faults 1 and 3 came back. Cruise continued to work though.
Turning off and restarting fixed it for a while.
Anyone know anything about the GM autobox attached to the 3.2 omega ?
There is a smell of burning oil which is dripping onto the left hand exhaust (not large amounts particularly - not enough to fail the new MOT)
I have assumed the oil leak is engine oil, but............
-
So check where the leak is coming from ,engine or box :y
low trans fluid will upset the gremlins which reside inside the magic box of tricks that is the automatic gear box :P
requires dexron 3 atf , a bad leak would be a pain if you had to top up often
there's a guide on checking the level :y
-
Did you have an "Automatic Gearbox" warning on the MID/GID/CID?
-
Following my BMW experience, quite possibly a speed sensor/abs* wiring fault.
*not the traditional failure modes.
Box will be stuck in third. I would also wager that it won't change gear manually. Drive it any distance and you'll need a new box regardless.
-
I know where there is a good ,allegedly rebuilt , AR35 locally should the worst case happen Newpod
-
Change fluid, and clean filter and sumps, there's a how too.

^^^ Definitely the first IA (Immediate Action) in this case, especially at that mileage which according to OOF means it should be on its third lot of ATF. :y

Definately NOT currently stuck in Third. It might have been when It was rather around on Friday though. I did drive it to Wolverhampton (95 miles) today and tomorrow it goes on the ramps. But this mornings journey was a Very pleasant 1.5 hours to do 95 miles. and An achievement of 34 mpg. (I sit at 70 mph or 50 mph with cruise on, doing my knitting and listening to Farming Today on R4)
Remind me what the Gearbox takes again. Dextrose 3 is it ?

That would really bugger it up. ;D

Dexron 3. ::)

Sounds like an intermittent issue in the auto gearbox or ABS systems, as said, as both can cause the gearbox to go into limp home.
You need to get the codes read, really, to find out exactly what is the problem.
First job is to check / top up the auto transmission fluid, though.
-
So last night I got the beast onto a 2 poster ramp, and added 1/2 tea cup of Halfords Finest* red Liqueur. I'm hoping* that tomorrow bring lots of sunshine, such that I'm swelting in stop start traffic on the way back north on the M6 like last week, so I can see if it's a problem.
I think the small oil leak I have is coming from the crank position sensor. IIRC the seal is tiny on that. Is there a part number / source ?
-
Remember the gearbox level needs to be checked / topped up hot with the engine running. :y
-
AND level.....

Yes. and Level. This fact was not lost on me.

Sorry, I guessed that you were already aware of that, but it's always worth the reminder! :y
Ron.

34 mpg on a 3.2?????.............I wish!
-
Me too. I think Ive done well to be averaging 24. ::)

After driving back today in stop start traffic I'm back down to 28 mpg :o

Either it's not a real 3.2 or you aren't driving it properly :-X

Definately a 3.2 :D
I have points on my licence. :(
My commute on a Monday is 95 Miles which is 1 mile to the Local Bypass, 5 miles to M57, then M62, and M6 to Wolverhampton, just about 1/2 mile from Junction 2 of M54. So 85 miles of motorway, 5 Miles of Dual Carriage way 4.5 miles of 50 mph A road, and 1/2 mile of 20 mph limit. (Which is the 1st 1/2 mile and I achieve about 13 mpg when the car is cold.
There is nowhere, apart from in the 1st 7 miles, when you can get (safely) over the speed limit. I just put it into cruise at a true 70, (or 50 in the Road works on the M6,) and watch the range increase. Most times the range is higher when I arrive than when I left home.
I have watched the instantaneous fuel consumption in the 50 limit and it hovers around 40-43 mpg.
-
Hmmm, sounds optimistic to me. What does a brim to brim fill up give? :-\
-
That said, what wheels/tyres are fitted :-\
-
I drive between 500-600 miles a week almost every week..combination of motorway/dual carriage ways/lanes/town and have never ever managed to get an average weekly usage of above 25mpg..and I do drive it properly somedays and others like Miss Daisy ...only because I can ;D
-
I used to get 28ish from my manual 3.2... More on a decent cruise. My auto 3.2 was about 23... I didn't opps about though :D
-
That said, what wheels/tyres are fitted :-\
235/45/17 Rainsports :o
So I thought it was sorted, did 380 miles over the weekend fine, and then yesterday on a Journey from wolverhampton to Bradford it all started again. Well I could get cruise, but definately stuck in 3rd. (Unless I moved the stick to make it move to second or 1st)
I probably should not have driven it like that but erm...... no excuse really. Coming back this evening. ALL was fine.
-
Some of you might think I'm a bit lazy, but I haven't really got to the bottom of this and whilst I topped up the oil, it is still a problem once the ambient temperature is above about 23 degrees C and the Temp gauge showing "above normal".
I do quite a lot of miles and I've managed to "con" the gearbox into not doing it by pressing the sport button, when I know I'm going to be coming down from cruising in top gear. and then Turning it off after I'm happy that I'm going to be sitting in top again for a while.
Anyway, I want to change the oil and filter, but the larger gasket of the 2 is "No Longer Stocked" by dealers and there are only 2 filters in the UK and the Dealer wanted paying before he'd get them in, and refused to take any payment over the phone. So:
As the 4L30-E box is similar / identical * to other applications across the world I'd like to ask if ANY of the following look right ?

Obviously I'd rather order parts from a UK supplier as likely to arrive this week.

Gearbox filter can be cleaned and re-used if you wish to do it that way.ABS used to sell a new filter and both sump gaskets at reasonable cost.perhaps worth a PM to KeithABS? I also understand sealant can be used in place of gaskets[?]

Interestingly you can also con it back to using all gears by stick it in neutral. :-[
-
This sounds as though a selector clean may be in order. :y

Today I drove From Bradford to Wolverhampton with lots of stop start traffic for the first 35 mins and an ambient temperature of 25 to 26 degrees C and I did not experience the symptoms.
Still, next week I'll change the oil and clean the selector.

Thats a hell of an (alleged) saving on those wishbones. :o
-
I had the wishbones replaced in 2016 about 40K ago, but I bought the kit because there is clonking from my drop links and one of the steering arms has a little play in it, and by the time I'd priced them up it was almost as cheap to get the wishbones as well, in the kit.
