Title: Astra - coolant level sensor.
Post by: pscocoa on 16 September 2020, 11:52:35
need to replace faulty level sensor. Official method seems to remove battery and other bits but I have seen someone do it by just removing clip, jiggling around to create a bit of space and managing to disconnect lead and  unscrew level sensor and replace. Anyone done this job?

sometimes it saves time to just get stuff out the way and get the job done with easy access ,not struggling
particularly if you have big hands and fat fingers like me  ;D

5 minutes work including removing the battery ,though i guess which model astra and which engine also are factors

the J is pretty much the same as astra H as far as getting at the LEVEL sensor goes BUT

because sometimes you have to replace the entire tank due to the float taking on coolant and sinking

suspect the "clip sensor" mentioned  is the coolant TEMPERATURE sensor on the coolant bridge which is held by a horse shoe type clip  :-\

Thanks all - I have taken the old sensor out and will try a new one when it arrives in stock on Monday. Got it out without battery removal as would have to unbolt other electric stuff. Found it easier to take the sensor out first before unclipping lead.

Changed sensor but problem remains. Not sure about float in expansion tank - seems to be ok. If it was float then you would expect warning  light to come on immediately but it takes 7 or so minutes of driving at reasonable speed. Could be circuit issue.

Is the tank cracked allowing coolant to short the sensor once warmed up :-\

Not losing anything at all.

Not quite my question  ;)

I was going to buy an expansion tank for the Astra from Euro Car Parts. They had the Febi Bilstein sensor (which I bought yesterday) but not the tank and it is not in their list. So looked around but there are reports of Febi Bilstein fakes on the market. Any safe recommendations as to where to get from please?

Both should be cheap enough from VX :y

Forgot to say - the new expansion tank solved the issue of low coolant warning light.
