I've got a irritating droning noise coming from the rear end of the Mondeo. 

It's definitely running gear so I'm thinking a wheel bearing is grumbling?

I switched the tyres around yesterday but the noise still comes from the back end, but I can't tell if it's nearside or offside.   

The little handbrake lever on the nearside caliper has been seizing up recently but it's currently free and working properly, and neither of the rear hubs seem hot after a run.

Any ideas?    TIA!

What I do in these situations is put up with it until something actually breaks, thus easily finding the offending part

I usually just turn the radio up and that seems to cure the problem.

Another sure fire way of finding the offending part.....eventually.  If nothing actually falls off, watch out for other motorists beeping their horns and pointing at the rear of you car with a worried look on their face.

If the brake has been binding then it tends to boil the grease in the wheel bearing, so my money would be on that.

Needs each corner jacking up and the wheel spinning, using a listening stick to check for rumbles

I was going to suggest that a 'Darzett dolly' left her vibrator in his car, but they make more of a buzz than a drone.

I checked for stowaways, but no luck.

Presumably wheels are same size all round, so a simple back to front swap will confirm if its tyres (I know how you like your cheap as chips, black and round tyres).
