Title: WANTED: gearbox drain bung with magnet
Post by: humbucker on 08 September 2016, 13:54:31
Anybody got a spare gearbox drain plug with magnet going spare? I had to force off my R28 manual transmission's bung with a chisel!

Surely it's a standard fitting that will cost a couple of quid from any motor factors in the country? There's a good chance it's the same as the engine sump plug(M14x1.5)

Obviously doesnt help with the magnet though

I bought a magnetic sump plug in the hope of that doing the trick, but the thread is much smaller on the new part. I'll have another look, perhaps I've been sent the wrong part...

I've got a couple of magnets from autoboxes, ring type if ones any use. Have you considered screwing a spark plug in like someone had done on an old motor of mine  ;D

I checked again, and I was right - the manual gearbox inspection and drain plugs are significantly bigger than the sump oil drain plug.

At least you're sorted. oh, as a slightly side issue, as this project is nigh-on a brand new Omega coming off the production line (certainly the Cav looked to that standard) ... are you going with Dexron 2, or 6, which is the 'new' spec and claim is 'Dexron 2 replacement', for the PAS pump? You can't buy new GM Dexron 2 any more, I've found, but Dexron 6 is unproven over long-term in Omegas.

The omega is a old car.
Far too old to be fannying around with trying this, that and the other  ::)
If Dex 2 is cheap and available then stuff Dex 2 in it  ;)
Its done the job for the last 20 years, it will do the job for another 20  ;)

Pretty sure I have a load of Dextron II on the shelf, so will probably stick with that.

In other news, the bungs arrived from Vauxhall. I bought two of them (one for the level check/filler aperture, one for the drain plug). I also bought the magnets that go inside them, primarily because my local main dealer parts desk operative told me that they needed to be ordered separately. Contrary to this advice, the bungs arrived fitted with brand new magnets.

You've. Been told in the other thread, omega's don't like anything newer than dex3, in the pas, and dex3 is what is spec for the gearbox, so why bother waffling on about dex6 and above. Also 3 is a lot cheaper. Moving on,time to put it to bed.

You've confused me, BG. Actually, no, I won't bite.

I was simply asking Humbucker a question.
