Omega MY98 onwards ABS/ TC lights on; speedometer not working

The first thing to try in this situation is to check and clean the ABS sensors on each wheel (especially the N/S/R which is where the speedo feed comes from)

If after doing this the lights are still on and the speedo isn't working then ideally find someone with a tech2 or similar system and see if the computer can communicate with the ABS ECU attached to the hydraulic modulator.

If it can't communicate with the ECU then the problem almost certainly lies with the ABS ECU itself. Unfortunately a very common problem, especially on MY98> versions (VIN W1000001 onwards)

Vauxhall charge about £800 to do the job all in with the unit itself costing about £300.

It is not a nice job to fit and requires patience amongst other things.

To access the unit you need to remove: (based on a 1998 3.0 MV6)

-Battery
-Engine relay/ ECU box
-Top radiator hose
-Coolant transfer pipe (thermostat feed pipe) (for clearance)
-Top plenum (optional but easier to locate the transfer pipe properly with it off)
-PAS pipe from top of pump for clearance
-PAS reservoir (ideally but can be moved out of the way, but will stretch pipes.)
-Undo all engine wiring loom round connectors from rear edge of battery tray.

When you are removing the PAS components note that the reservoir is directly above the ABS module, so make sure the fluid doesn't pour on the unit when you remove it.

The main top electrical plug on the ABS ECU has a sliding retaining clip. This slides towards the outside of the car, and is quite fiddly to get to even with all the bits out. You need to slide it as far as it will possibly go to allow the plug to come off.

Underneath the module is another, small, plug which has a more conventional plastic clip. Remove this and make sure the wire doesn't disappear into the bowels of the engine bay.

The ECU is held to the modulator with six small torx screws. The screws are well set back and in small apertures as can be seen from the picture below so you will need torx bits at least 2" long to actually reach the bolts. Also bear in mind with the unit on the car you can only actually see the top two screws. The rest are all done by touch, and a lot of luck.

To undo the bolts I used an angled screwdriver bit holder as there is extremely limited access to the bolts. See the following link:

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=A331405&ts=46440&id=61688

Once all the screws are undone (You may lose a couple but the new unit should come with new screws) the unit should just come straight off. Be careful not to get any dirt or fluid on the exposed section of the ABS modulator, and give the surface where the module meets it a gentle clean.

Refitting is ther reversal of removal to quote Haynes, but fitting the screws is much more difficult than removing them. Gently fit the top two to hold the unit in place. What I did next was to use insulating tape to stick the screw heads to the torx bit then very gently try and locate them. This will take many tries and a lot of swearing. The advantage of insulating tape is that when the screws are tight the tape will slip off of the bolt.

Once all six bolts are in place reconnect the plugs, refit the coolant transfer hose (replace the two rubber O rings), refit the plenum if removed (replace the manifold to plenum seals).

From then on refit as normal, and when it is all back together with a little bit of luck the lights should go off and the speedo should work again.

This is not a job I would wish on to anyone, but my point here is that it is possible to do it as a DIY job, even if it is a pain in the arse, and you will save yourself £400 - 500 worth of labour.

Any questions feel free to mail me.

BBA-reman do exchange items but, not cheap.

A breakers are also an option.

I have been trying to get a failed one to do a diag on......but so far not struck lucky

I've still got my old one from my (now Jimbob's) MV6 sitting in my shed if you want it.

Omega General Help / Re: Thermostat
« on: 21 May 2007, 21:34:18 »

 Hi.

If it is thermostat related, then I did replace it all when I fitted the ABS module.

I replaced the thermostat complete with housing, transfer pipe seals and all the inlet manifold rubber seals. (All genuine Vauxhall parts.)
I'm just wondering if it's coming from where the transfer pipe goes into the thermostat housing, as it has two rubber seals, and is just a push fit to hold it in, relying on the bolt on the outside of the block to hold it in place.

Have to say though, that I did have the plenum off a couple of times after that, as I changed the manifold seals, in an effort to get the idle back, when I thought it was an air leak, and also when the crank sensor packed up, and there was no evidence of leaking then.

Hope that is of some help.

My parents have a W reg 2.5 CDX Estate pre facelift manual, FSH, loads of work done, new exhaust manifolds, clutch (at the same time) 66,000 miles, metallic green, all the toys; alloys, cruise, climate control, radio phone system, heated seats, etc, in good condition and all working well. They've had it since it was 2000 miles old in October 2000.

I need an estimated value for the car, and also how easily do you think it will sell?

Basically they're looking at a 2.0 TDi Octavia Estate today and are trying to decide whether to trade it in or sell it privately.

Any help appreciated.

The unit itself is around £300 + VAT, and you would be looking at least the same again to fit it.

There is a "how to" in the maintenance guides on here.

Deffo not a fun job though.
When yours failed, was it on your mini facelift?

Yeah 1998 MV6. Generally the cars affected are VIN range "W10000001" onwards when they modified the ABS system.

Did you check the manifold was still all intact? They have a habit of cracking. Plenty of police ones have had that, my dads 2000 2.5 with 40k has had it amongst others. On my dads one the noise disappeared when the car was hot as the manifold expanded, filling in the crack.
In the end Vauxhall paid for them to be changed.

This will be a longish post, so my apologies but i really want to get this sorted

After ignoring my 1998 3.0 MV6 estate since february when it broke down on me (crank sensor) it has covered approximately 6 miles.
Basically the time has come when I really need to sort it out, MOT it, and move it on to someone who will use it more than I.

Problem 1:

Back in January i changed the ABS module and thermostat, so the car heated up and also to get my speedo and ABS back. That worked fine but ever since then the car has no idle when it is cold, and the only way to keep it running and to start it is to hold your foot gently on the accelerator. (Not ideal as its an auto...). However when it is warm it idles perfectly.
When I changed the bits I removed the plenum, both parts of the inlet manifold, the battery, ECU and basically anything that gave me access to the ABS module (which was a nightmare to do.) I have checked all the small vacuum lines thanks to Marks new diagrams and all are intact, connected and routed correctly. All the electrics are connected. I would think idle control valve, but before I did the work all was well; it idled and ran fine, it just didn't get warm.

Problem 2:

This is more of a minor irritation than a problem but when I bought the car the auto box was shafted. It slipped, jumped out of gear, wouldn't go into gear, kept going into limp mode and lots of other niggles. Anyway, long story short the dealer had the car back, changed the box and everything was better, except one niggle it has done with both boxes.
When it changes up its smooth with no problems, but when it changes in to fourth, quite frequently, it is almost as if it changes straight into "lock up" top, the revs drop right down it can just make B road progress a bit jerky really.

Sorry for the long posts but I really want to get it sorted as the car deserves more than to sit idle on my drive for ever more.

Thanks

Chronological, yes, but I have had up to six cars at one time.

I currently have the Discovery, Almera GTi, BMW 525ix Touring, Mondeo 1.8 TD Estate, and the Mondeo 2.0 RSi.

If I have a car like the 540i Touring (or even Jimbob's MV6), I'll always have something else I can use day to day, like my Mondeo 1.8 TD Estate (which if I'm really honest is probably the best car I have ever owned).

It's not quick, stylish etc, but it does absolutely everything I need a car to do. It will cruise at 90 mph, and has never returned less than 40 mpg. The car cost me £50 18 months ago, has not let me down once, and has cost absolutely nothing to run other than standard maintenance; oil changes etc.

After 16 years of driving I have just bought my 60th car.

1991 Land Rover Discovery 200 TDi manual.

Should be a laugh, and came with 6 months t & t.

Some will have seen them before, but here are pictures of all the others:
