Can you help? Noisy auto box
« on: 16 January 2007, 19:26:56 »

Hello

I've a '94 2.5CDX petrol 114k miles and the auto box has just started making a noise similar to 2 pens being tapped against one another.

A local specialist reckons it's a broken plastic washer on the Flix plate I think it called. It's a £450 to £650 job to fix.

Anyone got knowledge on this? Does it sound right or could it be something else?

I know the car is not worth the cost of repair. But the car is mint and I've had it 10 years so maybe a second hand 'box is the best solution.  Anyone got any other ideas?

Sorry, can't help with box, but welcome to the site :)

If a specialist has diagnosed that, I would be inclined to change the box - AR25 comes up often enough on ebay...

Thank you. Yes, I was thinking the second hand 'box was the best option.

Welcome. :)

Replacement with a known good box is certainly the way to go. It will be a lot cheaper.

Changing the box is not the most difficult of jobs (the torque convertor is a git to reach a couple of the bolts) and should take a decent garage about 2 hours all in.

I would say a replacement box and fluid can be had, with fitting for around £250.

By the way, you can use either the AR25 (2.5 box) or the stronger AR35 (3.0 box).

Good luck. :)

I've got a known good box from a 2.0, I presume that's an AR25. If so, PM me if you want it...
