Just had a look at the air filter on my omega( the star heads on the retaining screws were full of gunge, so doubt they've been out for a while), the filter was really cacky so I've left it out till I get one tomorrow PM. Trouble is, the idle sounds a bit lumpy now.

Will I be Ok leaving it out until I get a replacement>

Please don't run your decent looking Omega without an air filter...  ...the filter is there to protect the engine.

Right, I wont.  I was honestly expecting the answer to be that it would be fine and nearly wasn't going to ask the question. Glad i did!

With modern engines, with their tight tolerances, it doesn't take much crap to get in there and start wearing it prematurely.  In an absolute emergency, I would do it myself, but if air filter still in one piece, use it . Dealers always have in stock, so pick up a new tomorrow if that bad (About £10 tradeclub, £16 retail)

I'll have to stop thinking of my omega the way I did my old cars. I once had a triumph herald that went about with half the engine missing and the rest of the bits held on with sticky tape

Things have moved on a bit since then  

Be a shame to reduce the life of your motor, as it does look a nice car (assuming thats your avatar)

Its better to run it with a clogged filter than no filter at all. I used to run a Herald many years ago, it never missed a beat! you could stand in the engine bay to work on it ( not like the Omega) and what about the 22 foot turning circle "cool" however the demise of it was the very common problem of corrosion of the chassis

MMmmmmm good point - had a look at mine and looks a bit iffy - supposed to have had a service from the garage before I got it.  Will have it out soon as poss. Thanks for the reminder

Many garages now, if you ask them to 'service' the car won't do air filter it seems. You think you're getting it services as per service schedulre, but in many cases you're getting little more than oil change.

May be worth checking when fuel filter last changed as well...

For some strange reason, the Air filter is quoted by Vx as needing replacement every four years or 40,000 miles. Yet it costs next to nothing and takes 3 minutes to change - so I change mine every year.

Incidentally, what I would in STMO123's case, is turn the filter so that it's external side is facing down, then tap it on the ground to remove any loose dirt (without damaging the filter or rubber frame), and then put it back and use it until a new replacement is available.

And 40k between filter changes is a bit daft. I guess it depends where you live, but I do mine every 6-9 months (10 - 15k)
