Omega General Help / Locking wheel nut problem
« on: 02 December 2017, 12:57:37 »
My sister has bought a new Vauxhall Mokka. I used to service her old Meriva, but have never touched her Mokka, dealer does that. She had a puncture last Thursday, luckily near home. Car has no spare wheel, just an aerosol can. She walked home and summoned the breakdown service. The breakdown man recovered the car to a local tyre shop. Initially they could not find the locking wheel nut tool (LWNT), when they did it did not fit. She contacted her garage, who had done the service, and they admitted they must have mixed up the LWNTs. They delivered a box full of assorted LWNTs, none of which fitted. They provided a courtesy car, which she is still using.

Is there a master LWNT for Vauxhalls? How is this problem overcome in the trade?

I suppose another customer has her LWNT, and she has his. I wonder why they did not trace the guy?

General Car Chat / Trade Club oil still available in Bristol
« on: 02 December 2017, 09:11:56 »
Happy to report that yesterday Drive Bristol sold me 20 litres of 10W/40 oil for £25 plus VAT (£80.44 unit price), 20 litres of Dex Cool antifreeze for £20 (£74.50) and spin on oil filters for £2.96 (£4.60). That makes my Autobahnstormers membership fee money well spent.

I note all steering boxes on e-bay have drop links attached. It seems sensible to ignore Haynes and disconnect drop arm from central track rod, then on reassembly alignment should be easy - pop drop arm hole on central track rod pin, set wheels straight ahead, set steering wheel central.

Any comments?

Omega General Help / Will any V6 steering box fit any other V6?

I only ask because Steve Brown says they are all numbered, suggesting I might need just the right one.

General Car Chat / battery labelled DO NOT JUMP START
« on: 18 November 2017, 07:46:28 »
Friend of mine has a small Kia, with a battery labelled DO NOT JUMP START. He reckons his car cannot be jump started, I reckon it means his battery is too small to jump start another car. Who is right?

2003 3.2 manual saloon
How she did it goodness knows, she is in Enfield, her bag, flat key, etc. are all in the car. She is at a friend's house. I have a spare key her in Somerset, much good that will do her. She is a member of the RAC or AA, she is not sure which, we thought RAC, but she rang them and do not have any record of her at her London address. Is there any way of getting in short of breaking a window? Which window is the best to break? What should she do?

Omega General Help / Removing drop arm from steering box
« on: 08 October 2017, 15:32:23 »
2.5 petrol manual estate
Changing wishbones, track road and drop links has got me nowhere, steering still wanders. I now suspect joint between steering box and central track rod, which is very sloppy. But I can't get it off. Haynes says use a suitable puller. I do not possess a suitable puller; access is poor and gap between item is too narrow for the oullers I have. Would heat help? I have done this job before and the arm fell off easily - not this time. Any suggestions? Pic follows.

Omega General Help / EML on M4, went off as I left M4
« on: 07 October 2017, 08:31:47 »
2.5 petrol manual estate
Last night running homeward on M4 EML cameon, went off, came on again for 30 miles, as I left the M4 it went off and stayed off thereafter. Codes were 19 incorrect rpm signal and 16 knock signal circuit 1. I had unplugged and replugged knock sensor recently changing the cam cover gaskets on bank 1, so I checked the connector, plugged in OK. What's up?

Omega General Help / Hole in cill pre MOT
« on: 04 October 2017, 20:03:27 »
2.6 petrol manula saloon
Daughter Catherine brought her car home for MOT recently. It drives perfectly, all electrics work, exhaust is fine. I was putting on a better set of wheels and tyres, and thought I would check the cills for holes at the point by the rear wheel jacking points where testers attack with picks. Offside was fine, I wirebrushed it and undersealed it, but the nearside was not so good. I removed the cill cover and wirebrushed it. Please advise how I should proceed from here.

Omega General Help / WISHBONE CHANGE: HOW DO I TIE STRUT OUT OF WAY?
« on: 29 September 2017, 13:39:19 »
2.5 petrol manual estate
I am changing the wishbones. Guide says tie the Mcpherson strut out of the way to allow wishbone to be horizontal during removal and replacement. In the past I have had sons hold strut out of the way, but sons are unreliable. I have tried tying it to a nearby chest of drawers, but it did not work well. Could I perhaps remove the wing inner plastic liner and tie strut to something strong at the front? What do members do?

Omega General Help / v6 OIL LEAK
« on: 12 September 2017, 12:16:39 »
2.5 petrol manual estate
About to change the oil on this car, and found the sump base covered in oil..Source seems to be on the right hand side, not either of the pulley seals, there is an oil drop on the starter solenoid. I see a mysterious pipe above it with an open end.

Looking from above, the pipe is beneath the exhaust manifold, and at the front end seems attached to the block with 2 hose clips.

By the way, this is not the car did the breathers on last Saturday. I did look at the pipe on  that car, and it is the same, with the rear end open.
Please advise.

Omega General Help / Do my cam cover gsskets need changing?
« on: 08 September 2017, 17:31:46 »
2.5 petrol V6 manual estate
I drove this car 30 miles today, and got the occasional whiff of oil. I spent the afternoon cleaning the breathers thoroughly, no idea when they were last cleaned.
Then I removed all the plug leads to check for oil in plug holes. All were bone dry, except 1 and 4, which had a hint of oil on the bottom of the insulators. I fitted new plugs 2 years and 25000 miles ago.

I have known plug holes brimming over with oil on ther cars. Question is - should I change the cam cover gaskets while I am about it, or is this slight leak best left alone, after removing plus 1 & 4 and draining the oil into the engine?
