Omega General Help / Re: Check oil level mystery?
« on: 25 March 2009, 13:42:02 »
I occasionally had this problem in my old S-reg Elite when driving hard up hill, ie maximum load. As you have found, the problem can't be seen when the engine is off.

I concluded that, either by design or because of past maintenance, some of the oil return channels were restricted - remember that oil is pumped around the block. This would cause the sump level to drop when the engine (and therefore the oil pump) was working hard. When the engine stopped, the oil drained back down to the sump.

Apart from the disconcerting oil light on the dash, the only problem I could see is if the sump level drops low enough to starve the pump.

I'm just wondering how do you check a level sensor? I can think of one way to do it - but I'm not going to suggest it!

Omega General Help / Re: Gas conversion or not
« on: 25 March 2009, 12:33:40 »
I used to run a 2.5 Elite on LPG, before I sold it. I agree with all of the above comments.

If it is to be "professionally" converted at £2200 and saves 8p/mile - that's a 25000 mile payback. I covered twice that distance so I was satisfied. Arguably, you will get some of it back when you sell the car.

One problem in MK is a lack of gas stations. I think there are two or three at present (Shell at Coffee Hall and at Paulerspury, BP at Kingston).

If you are not going to do it DIY but want to work on other engine problems yourself you will need to at least know how to dismantle the injection system. It has to be removed to work on the cam gaskets, cam belt etc. The evaporator, filter, ECU and injection system all take up room under the bonnet.

Finally, if you are not a DIYer, be prepared to get into negotiations with the LPG fitter and your regular mechanic when things go wrong. They will both try to pass off the problem to the other.

As far as I could tell over 50000 miles, there was no loss of power, and, with a good set of injectors it was a quiet run. The ECU on mine (a BRC system) had to be replaced three times under warranty because they fitted it in the scuttle panel and it drowned! And yes, unless you DIY, be prepared to spend some time tidying up the installation afterwards.

There is a local LPG fitter just south of MK. If you want to compare notes, send me a PM, I'll let you know how he works.

Good luck.

Omega General Help / Fuel tank vent valve
« on: 15 March 2009, 07:59:24 »
Hello all

I have an error code 61 on the paperclip test (facelift 3.0 V6). This reads as "fuel tank ventilation valve voltage low". Does anyone know the location of this and any guesses about the cause.?

Symptom: engine light off when pulling up hills or accelerating / light on when cruising or running down hill. Car runs A1.

Thanks.

Allenm, I'm feeling a bit guilty on this one, being just a few miles away and having done this all recently. However my car is in for its MOT today and I'm away on holiday from tomorrow for 2 weeks. If you are still in a dilemma when I get back I'll pop around & give you a hand. Good luck.

That's bad news, being 5 minutes away (Haversham) I wish I could help, but spare hours are rare at present. Given that Crownhill may not give you too much for it, is it worth parking it up on your driveway and doing as Mark says, but take your time about it? Its not really old enough to scrap and it would be a good way of learning.

Omega General Help / Re: Omegas and LPG
« on: 16 July 2006, 16:47:11 »
Hi Martin, excellent write-up there. I know we've discussed this before (you-know-where), but I'm interested in where other people have located their gas ECU. My reason for asking: the unit that was replaced in mine following heavy rain some months ago drowned again last week after those thunderstorms. It's being replaced this week. Mine is presently in the scuttle panel exactly where yours is but the LPG engineer wants to move it somewhere else (possibly inside the cabin under the dash). I know that space is tight with a V6 under the bonnet but just wondering what others have done?

You'll also need to visit your local orthopedic surgeon to have a double joint inserted in your wrist for changing the auxilliary belt tensioner and the DIS pack....if it's V6 we are talking about.

I had this for a while. Typically at 70-80mph uphill on the M40. In fact, this was the only place  it ever happened. Actual oil level was normal. It stopped occurring after I changed the cam seals and cleared the breather pipes.

My theory, for what it's worth, is as follows:
  • The oil return channels on the V6 are marginally too small by design

If the breathers are blocked, oil return to the sump is further retarded
The oil level sensor is in the front half of the sump (????)
If you run the oil pump flat out (eg high speed, uphill) you will starve the sump momentarily
Hence the false alarm
[/list]

The problem with false alarms, of course, is that one day they are real. So don't entirely ignore it.

Cheers

My Car Feels Lumpy when driving it used to be smooth as a babys bum.

When At idle or driving the gear stick vibrates if this make any difference or is that normal.

It does play up on gas from time to time I put my foot down and it Bucks and Kangeroos I know On Gas it will play up if there are any faults. Its Fine On Petrol apart from the lumpyness and vibration.

Hi there, sounds like a similar problem to mine some weeks ago (but on a V6, so slightly different conditions under the bonnet). LPG tests the high-tension system more than petrol, so progressive faults will show up first on LPG, but eventually start to show on petrol. A breakdown in the DIS, leads or plugs can be a progressive failure, but not always. What is lumpiness and vibration today (on petrol) will be misfiring under load tomorrow then complete failure later. As a start I would suggest that you change the HT leads, firstly because its far easier than the DIS, and secondly because it seems to be a slighlty more common failure. If that doesn't work, then do the DIS.

And when you fix the problem, please let us all know what it was.

Since it's useless anyway, could you use a cold chisel and club hammer to careful tap the outside of the ring anticlockwise? It should give after a few taps.

The bonnet plunger is a common problem, I found the extra padding worked for a while then it would wake me up again. I've now disconnected the circuit cable from the plunger and I have no more problems except when someone looking under the bonnet tries to help me by plugging it back in. The rest of the system still works fine without it.

And, I may be missing something, but why is it there anyway? Just in case someone wants to steal your DIS pack or spark plugs?

Omega General Help / Airbag warning light
« on: 16 July 2006, 16:52:23 »
Hi all

I've got a fair idea what's required here, but I thought I'd run it by the experts. Last weekend the airbag/belt tensioner warning light appeared. From posts elsewhere I suspect that the under-seat wiring may have been disturbed - the car had been used by my son-in-law for a week long trip through Scotland with five adults on board and they had the passenger front seat well forward at one stage.

From what I've read, the only way it can be reset is with a Tech-1 or Tech-2 (98 Elite, so Tech-2, presumably). Then its a matter of working out whether the fault was transitory or is still there.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Jeremy

Hello all

I've been out of touch for a couple of weeks, daughter's wedding & all, so it was a surprise to visit you-know-where. After working out how to contact Dave and seeing this new forum, I had no choice but to sign up, did I. Dave, Jamie, Mark & Finlay, you've done a wonderful job, as ever. Congratulations.

It looks like I touched a raw nerve here!

Just a reminder about the original subject: bid shielding - here's an update.

Lady with 9 x 100% feedback points places W-reg Elite 3.0 on eBay. OK, she is quite new to eBay.

Car reaches last hour and is "bid shielded" by Fagan and Oliver (two pickpockets). Other bidders are blocked out. Car sells for absurdly low price.

Fagan & Oliver Twist, identities hidden by eBay,  make no contact until they turn up at her place next day.

They brag about how they blocked the bid. Her car is spotless except for two rust spots about 5p piece size - they call it a rust-bucket. They abuse her and then try to beat the price down further.

She gets frightened by their abuse and asks them to leave. They do so, swearing at her neighbours as they go.

They give her negative feedback. She is now at 90%. She can't give negative feedback - new eBay rules!!!!

eBay is not interested.

True story.
