Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse.

The container ship wasn't even pretending to be in the marked channel under the bridge :o

It may have been trying to cut the corner to the west of Fort Carroll  but would have had plenty of room to clear the bridge first.

I take there was a pilot navigating it out of the port. Not a very good one if there was.

This is a much more informative video. You can see that the ship's lights go out, then come back on again and large plumes of exhaust (suggesting full emergency reverse?) all prior to the impact. To me, that suggests mechanical failure of some sort.

I read earlier that there were two pilots on board. Seems to have been some kind of equipment failure, it will all come out in the wash.

That certainly throws a different light on it :y looks like they'd almost bought the bow back around.

I see that the port is expected to close indefinitely, causing huge supply chain issues. Last year more than 847,000 cars and light trucks passed through the port, the 13th consecutive year it has led all other ports for these. Nissan, Toyota, GM, Volvo , JLR and VW use Baltimore for imports and exports (Source: National Times).

Imagine the extra commute journeys.

Plus the pressure to get a replacement bridge and quickly!

Given just how far inland it is, it's surprising just how busy it is.

By the reports so far it should never have been let out of the dock, it was tripping out even on light loads according to one spokeswoman.

From the video the traffic over the bridge was fortunately exceptionally light, another 4/5 hours later it could have been a veritable disaster  :-\

It shows the downside of a single engine propulsion system, lose the engine, lose the lot!

Emergency gen will just about keep the lights on, run the control systems, steering hydraulics and charge the start air system for the main plant, not a lot else.

Traffic had been stopped but, there was still a maintenance team who did not manage to get back in the van and away in time

Here's one: it was the Russians trying to potato bomb Kiev for some reason. Showing their usual competence, they were in the wrong country, using the wrong form of transport that broke down, and the potatoes were in one of the bottom containers. :y

According to a previous  member of crew being interviewed the vessel had encountered several mechanical problems in the past, probably well past its serviceable life & poor maintenance wouldn't suprise me in the slightest, hope whoever owns it has decent insurance for all involved , I can see this incident opening up a whole can of worms.

That smacks of a disgruntled former employee rather than anything meaningful.

The ship is registered in Singapore and is owned and operated by Singapore companies and it's been regularly inspected with minimal compliance issues, the most recent one was in New York late last year iirc.
