Land rover 300tdi

had a read of auto data,got a head gasket to do on this engine saturday,seems straight forward,anything i should know that may cause big problems  :y

Easy enough......change the belts and tensioner whilst in there though.

The bigger question is why has the head gasket gone as its not a common occurrence at all.

Crank pulley is always a shit to get off.

What Mark said plus watch out if water has got into the bores and caused hydro lock as it'll bend a con rod like cheese :y

thee were 3 or 4 different ticknesses of gaskets used on these,need to make sure you use the right one for the car.

its OHV why would you touch the cambelt unless its due?

its as easy as a mini, without having to crouch.

its as easy as a mini, without having to crouch.

Because nobody ever does change them and when they go its curtains.

Good maintenance and easier to do with the top end out the way.

Head gasket was replaced a couple off weeks ago,but the person doing it reused the old bolts and no 1 bolt snapped when tighten up,hence having to strip it down,remove broken bolt from head and put back together,job didnt go to bad,got most of it back together,just waiting on ild feed pipe to turbo and crank breather pipe,so all i have to do now,is refit turbo oil feed pipe,refit exhaust manifold,connect pipes ,fill with coolant and start it up.

its ok to re use the bolts, but if the bolt bottoms in a hole, it can cause a broken bolt, as would a new bolt.

A few land rover owners ive spoken to and some are mechanics recommended to use new bolts every time,never had a problem when i torqued head down with new bolts.

On the 200/300 TDi and later engines I would agree, always use new bolts.

The cylinder pressures on these are much higher than the old non turbo and 19J engines so clamping force is pretty critical.

After putting it back together yesterday,the oil feed flexi pipe to turbo decide to dump oil on floor,so removed and waited for replacement to be delivered yesterday afternoon,popped round this morning,fitted pipe,topped up oil,cranked it over a couple of times pipes were oil tight,couple more cranks and bleed the fuel to injectors she started,all good,and really wasnt that bad to change head gasket on.
